Why Do I Want a Price on Carbon?

Young Adult Testimonials

Note to Policymakers

These slides show the faces and voices of young people that support carbon pricing. Participants are all under 30 and reside in the United States. They were collected between 2017 and 2019 by Citizens’ Climate Higher Education, a project of Citizens’ Climate Lobby. Their views are entirely their own and not written or paid for by Citizens’ Climate Lobby.

“My home state of Alaska is warming at twice the rate as the rest of the United States. In the recent photo to the left, I am paddling two miles across a lake to view a glacier; I have photos from when I was a toddler and this lake didn’t even exist – in fact, you could touch this same glacier from the highway. I am particularly supportive of carbon pricing as a solution to climate change because it is a market-based solution that will yield immediate action, which is evidently critical to the health and preservation of my home state.”Hometown: Anchorage, AlaskaSchool: West High SchoolActivities: Youth Organizer for Alaska Youth for Environmental Action

“There are so many places to travel to and people to meet! Who would want to live in a world where that isn’t possible? Our world is an incredible place that is often taken for granted. We are advocating to put a price on carbon since emissions have negatively impacted the natural beauty of the planet as well as our health. We should all have the option of living life longer so we can live it to the fullest. You can keep doing what you love with the people you love; take a risk on the next destination. What you imagine doing tomorrow is possible only if you take action now.”

Rather than looking to new places in outer space or extra terrestrial areas that we can move to, we should recognize that our home is right here, right in this dirt and within this green and blue. “A warmer global climate may not immediately seem all that bad. For instance, some like to point out all the new land that would open to agriculture in the Northern hemisphere. The problem is, our global society is built for our current relatively-stable climate. We cannot transition as quickly as temperatures are rising. That spells human catastrophe, worst for those who are least responsible for climate change. That's why I'm demanding a price on carbon starting today, not 10 years from now. A price on carbon, implemented correctly, would be the single most effective policy to mitigate climate change. It's as simple as that. Let's stop pretending this isn't a global crisis and make the U.S. a true global leader in climate action.”

“My body is composed of atoms and molecules derived from foods around the world. The carbon atom of my arm may be from a rice field in China, while my left big toe is possibly a small percentage of the Philadelphia Cream Cheese that my home town is famous for. What is the cost for my survival? I am asking for an implementation of equitable carbon prices to put a price on the society and nature relationship.” Hometown: Lowville, New YorkSchool: St. Lawrence UniversityMajor: Environmental Studies and MathDistrict: NY-21

“My friends and adopted family members in Kiribati have silently suffered great losses in crops and houses, and they have even buried their own children because of the impact climate change is already having on the country. What happens in Kiribati and other front-line nations should be a wake up call for the entire world, but unfortunately, few people know Kiribati exists. To help spread the news from Kiribati, a small group of Kiribati youth and concerned individuals from around the world have created Humans of Kiribati, an online showcase of stories from the front-line.”

If life is what we want to protect, promote, conserve, or foster then why do we throw it away like trash? We create and then throw away 1,000,000 plastic bottles per minute. “Where does plastic come from?”; “Where does plastic go?” We should pay for this. We will pay for this, and we will stop.
