The Arts at AVS

In music class at the Alamance Virtual School, we use a variety of web-based programs to learn about and create music, focusing on popular and commercial musical styles such as rock, hip-hop, electronic, and other contemporary styles. We explore the history of popular music through the last century with an emphasis on understanding the role music has played in our lives and culture. We learn how to create and produce music for various purposes such as video games, movies or the next hit song, using online software. It is a student-centered class, utilizing musical instruments, skills and interests the students already have. This is a class where everybody is a musician who can create and participate in making music!

    • Art at Alamance Virtual School is focused on student strengths and experiencing growth. North Carolina standards now have students identified as Beginner, Intermediate, Accomplished, and Advanced. Classes are structured where multiple levels of achievement attend together. All levels focus on:
    • Investigating processes and materials to create art.
    • Critical thinking to connect with art across styles, cultures, and time periods.
    • Observation and reflection skills to respond to peer artwork and to art beyond the classroom.
    • The ability to critique and self-reflect enhancing student abilities to present their artwork.
    • Alamance Virtual School Art encourages creativity, skill development, art appreciation, and autonomy. We don't "do arts and crafts" where everyone's art looks the same. Instead, we create art and develop craft.
