Whether you access Panopto via Canvas through My Media in the Global Navigation Menu or Media Gallery in the Course Navigation Menu, the interface you’ll use is the same. The primary difference is which folder you start in: My Folder for personal content or the course media folder.

The key features of the Panopto interface within Canvas include:

Search: Search within the current folder for media using keywords. Panopto searches titles, spoken words, on-screen text, and slide content for thorough results.
+ Create: The blue + Create button lets you:

Record videos using Panopto Capture (browser-based).
Upload existing media files.
Create playlists.
Create new folders or subfolders.

Folder Location: Shows the current folder name. Use the drop-down menu to switch folders or search by folder name or date.
Open in Panopto: Opens the current folder in the full Panopto Web app in a new tab, keeping your current folder context.
Folders & + Add Folder: Displays subfolders within the current folder. Use + Add Folder to create new subfolders for organization.
Sort Direction: Changes content sort order (ascending or descending).
Sort By: Sort your media by name, date, duration, or rating using this drop-down menu.
View: Choose between List view (default with thumbnails and details), Thumbnail view (thumbnail with names and dates), or Table view (list without thumbnails).
Content Area: Shows all media in the selected folder. Select a title or thumbnail to open a video for playback or editing.

The Panopto Web interface functions similarly to the Canvas interface, with some differences in layout and options placement. For example, the + Create button is located in the left-hand navigation menu and offers additional options not found in the Canvas interface, and the Search bar here is centered at the top of the page.

The key features of the Panopto Web interface include:

Home: The landing page showing media shared with your, new content, and recently viewed videos.
My Folder: Your personal media workspace, the same folder accessed via My Media in Canvas.
Shared with Me: Displays videos that others have shared with you.
Everything: Shows all media you have permission to view across the university.
Browse: Allows you to search for and navigate to specific folders to view their contents.

In both Panopto Web and Canvas, you can select a media thumbnail or title to open and view that content.

Set Up Your Recording Inputs:�At the top of the Panopto Capture interface, you’ll see options for Audio, Video, and Screens and Apps.

Audio: Choose your preferred microphone. The selected device shows a checkmark, and active input is indicated by green volume bars and animated waveforms. Hover over a device and select Switch to change it.
Video: Select your webcam, and optionally add a second camera (e.g., for a lab or document view). Use the gear icon in the bottom-right corner to blur or replace your background.
Screens and Apps: Choose what to display in your recording:

Tab: Share a browser tab (with preview).
Window: Share a specific app window (e.g., PowerPoint, Word).
Entire Screen: Share your full screen; dual monitors will show both screens as options.

Note: Audio sharing (e.g., for playing a video) is only available for Tab and Entire Screen sharing options.

Be mindful of privacy and clarity. Close any unrelated apps or browser tabs. Open any files (e.g., Google Slides) before recording to avoid extra editing.

Start and Stop Recording:

Select the red Record button to begin (a five-second countdown will appear).
If sharing a tab, use the View Tab option to jump to the content you’re sharing.
When finished, select Stop Sharing, then go back to the Panopto Capture tab and select the red Stop button.

Upload and Save Your Recording:

Your video will upload automatically. Don’t close the tab until it’s complete.
Rename your video with a descriptive title.
Confirm the folder location. This defaults to the folder you selected when launching Panopto Capture (e.g., My Folder) and can be changed.
Optional fields include:

Description and Tags (keywords).
Editor access (more information included in Panopto Organization & Analytics workshop).
Preview via the View button or in the current interface.
Share settings (also included in Panopto Organization & Analytics workshop).

Manage Recording Options:

Redo: Deletes the recording and lets you start over (confirmation required).
Record New: Launches a new recording session.

Open the video editor.
If desired, change the title.
Trim the video.
Apply to save changes.
Turn on User Setting Notifications.

Open the Video Editor:

Locate the video you want to edit.
Hover over the thumbnail and select the Edit icon (clapperboard with pencil), or select the three-dot More actions menu and select Edit.
You can also open the video and select the Edit icon in the top-right corner of the viewer.

Rename the Video (optional):

In the editor, select the title at the top of the screen to rename the video.
Alternatively, rename a video from the thumbnail by selecting the three-dot More actions menu and selecting Rename.

Trim the Video:

Use the timeline at the bottom of the editor, which includes separate rows for each stream (e.g., video, screen share).
A red vertical bar tracks playback location while the video plays.
Trim the Beginning:

Select the Cut tool (scissors icon) above the timeline.
Play the video and pause just before the point where you want it to start.
Drag the dark gray line from the left of the timeline to the red bar.

Trim the End:

If the Cut tool (scissors icon) is no longer active, reselect it.
Play and pause the video just before it should end.
Drag the dark gray line from the right side of the timeline to the red bar.

Trim the Middle:

Use the Cut tool (scissors icon) to click and drag over any section in the middle of the video that you want to trim out.
Trimmed sections will appear grayed out on the timeline.

Tips:

Use the preview cuts during playback option (checked by default) to review edits.
Use Undo and Redo at the top right to refine changes.
Use the magnifying glass or slider near the top right of the timeline to zoom in and out for precise editing.

Apply to Save Changes:

When edits are complete, select Apply at the top right of the editor.
Note: Panopto’s editor is non-destructive, so trimmed sections are hidden from playback but not permanently deleted. You can restore them later if needed.
