HISTORY OF AYURVEDA

Ayurveda dates back to almost the times of Hindu Mythology. Dhanvantri was the physician of the gods, who gave the term Ayurveda.

It is a branch of medical science that was invented 5000 years ago in the Indian subcontinent. Products from plants, animals and mineral sources are used to make medicines.

It is a part of the Atharva Veda which is one of the four Vedas. Ayurveda in Sanskrit means the knowledge of life. Maharishi Charka is known as the father of Ayurveda as he was the main contributors to Ayurveda.

This is a traditional Hindu system of medicine, incorporated in the Atharva Veda.

During the times Ayurveda was prevalent, there weren't any fancy machines to provide help in the diagnosis of a condition. Ayurveda is keenly based on observation of one's body. Previously, noticing the irregular heart impulses a doctor could diagnose a patient, with specific diseases.

DIET AND AYURVEDIC TREATMENT

Ayurvedic treatment helps in creating a healthy body by using different methods that involve the different ways and paths of Ayurveda.

Diet is used as a therapy in Ayurvedic treatments , and is much more important than medicines or yoga itself.

The main objective of providing an Ayurvedic diet is to help people practice mindful eating habits by intaking minimally processed food. The ayurvedic treatment uses diet to enhance the mental as well as the spiritual development of a human being.

What science tells about Ayurveda

  1. Results from a 2013 clinical trial compared two Ayurvedic formulations of plant extracts against the natural product glucosamine sulfate and the drug celecoxib in 440 people with knee osteoarthritis. All four products provided similar reductions in pain and improvements in function.A preliminary and small NCCIH-funded 2011 pilot study with 43 people found that conventional and Ayurvedic treatments for rheumatoid arthritis were similarly effective. Outcomes from a small short-term clinical trial with 89 men and women suggested that a formulation of five Ayurvedic herbs may help people with type 2 diabetes. Turmeric, an herb often used in Ayurvedic preparations, may help with ulcerative colitis

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice that focuses on breathing, flexibility and strength to promote mental well-being. It is composed of a set of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines.

15 of 50

How did it spread?

In the yogic lore, Shiva is seen as the first yogi or Adiyogi. Several Thousand years ago, on the banks of the lake Kantisarovar in the Himalayas, Adiyogi poured his profound knowledge into the legendary Saptarishis or "seven sages”, who then later spread this yogic essence to different parts of the world. Sun was given highest importance during the vedic period. The practice of ‘Surya namaskara’ may have been invented later due to this influence

16 of 50

History of Yoga

The practice of yoga has been traced back to over 5000 years ago in Northern India like in that of the Indus Valley Civilization. The word Yoga first appeared in the oldest sacred texts, the Rig Veda and is derived from the Sanskrit root “Yuj '' which literally means 'join' or 'unite'.

17 of 50

Aim?

The ultimate aim of Yoga is to experience the Truth, leading to the union of individual consciousness with that of the Universal Consciousness, indicating a perfect harmony between the mind and body, Human & Nature. One who experiences this oneness of existence is said to be in yoga, and is termed as a yogi.

HISTORY

Siddha medicine is one of the most ancient forms of medicine in India. It exists from the times of the Indus valley civilization itself. It originated in south India, and was especially practised in Tamil Nadu by the Dravidians.

The word Siddha is from the Tamil word "siddhi", meaning heavenly bliss or “perfection to be attained”.

From the mythological perspective, it is said to have originated from God Shiva who taught it to his wife Parvati. Parvati then passed it on to Nandi and Nandi taught about it to nine Devtas.

Ancient Siddhars believed that humans were required to live according to the laws of nature. They led simple lives and were unconcerned with caste, creed or colour.

25 of 50

PRINCIPLES

  • Siddha medicine, traditional system of healing that originated in South India and is considered to be one of India’s oldest systems of medicine. The Siddha system is based on a combination of ancient medicinal practices and spiritual disciplines as well as alchemy and mysticism.

  • Three of the elements—air, fire, and water—are emphasized in Siddha medicine because they are believed to form the three fundamental components that make up the human constitution. These three components—vata, pitta, and kapha (representing air, fire, and water, respectively)
  • According to the theories of humoral pathology, all diseases are caused by the differing mixture of vata, pitta, and kapha. Their proportions in the body govern a person’s physical and mental disposition. The elements form the connecting link between the microcosm (the human) and the macrocosm (the world). Thus, the external air corresponds to the internal vata, the external heat corresponds to the internal pitta, and the external water corresponds to the internal kapha.

DIAGNOSIS

The Eight Methods of Examination (Envakai Thervukal) is used for the diagnosis, aetiology, treatment and prognosis.

First, the cause of the disease is identified through the examination of pulse, urine, eyes, the study of voice, the colour of body, tongue and the status of the digestive system. The system has worked out a detailed procedure of urine examination which includes the study of its colour, smell, density, quantity and oil drop spreading pattern. Its approach is holistic, which means the diagnosis involves the study of the person as a whole as well as their disease. For example, considering their mental state of mind and such. This is because the Siddha System of Medicine emphasises that medical treatment is oriented not just to disease but has to take into account the patient, environment, age, gender, race, habits, diet, physical condition, etc. This means the treatment has to be unique for all, which ensures that mistakes in diagnosis or treatment are minimal.

27 of 50

TREATMENT

Treatment is aimed at restoring balance to the mind-body system.Diet, lifestyle, yoga and meditation play a major role not only inmaintaining health but also in curing diseases.

Siddha has safe herbal and herbo-mineral treatments for both common and rare diseases.

The system is capable of treating all types of diseases other than emergency cases. Most skin problems, Psoriasis, urinary tract infections, diseases of the liver and gastrointestinal tract, general debility, postpartumanaemia, diarrhoea, general fevers, arthritis and allergicdisorders to name a few.

Even today, many Covid 19 treatment centers in Tamilnaduuse Siddha medicine due to its excellent immunity buildingproperties.

TREATMENT- MEDICINES

Siddha Medicines which contains mercury, silver, arsenic, lead and sulphur have been found to be effective in treating infectious diseases, so more research is being done to improve their effectiveness

Herbo Minerals- The herbomineral preparations essentially contain minerals and metals as an integral part of the formulations but these metals are not present in elemental form. They are in the compound form and their fate in the body will not be the same as it is for the elemental form of heavy metals.

Siddha medicines use Mooligai (herbs), Thathu (minerals) and Jeeva (animal products) as their sources.

Though these medicines are made through traditional methods, modern day doctors have admitted that these medicines also work incredibly well to cure common ailments. In fact, many present-day medicines are made after studying such ancient medicines. It has also left many scientists surprised that these discoveries about nutritional values of natural products have been made thousands of years back.

INTRODUCTION

The Unani System of Medicine wouldn't be one any of may have heard of. That is because this system is not very widespread and is thus, not heard by many. Let Us, tell you what this system of medicine is.

The Unani  Medicine is an Islamic medicine system. It is a traditional system (Perso-Arabic) of healing and health maintenance.

Unani is practiced in South and Central Asia. This System though is not only a Perso-Arabic System but has also been highly influenced by the Greeks, Indians and Chinese.

BIRBAHUTI, is an ingredient used in Unani Medicine.

35 of 50

ORIGIN & HISTORY

The origin of Unani medicine traces its way all the way back to the Greek times. The Unani medicine is found in the doctrines of ancient Greek physicians, Hippocrates and Galen. Later Arab elaborations were introduced by Ibn Sina and Al Razi.

The Unani System of Medicine, was introduced to India with the coming of the Delhi Sultanate Dynasty. This system was used by them quite frequently and Alauddin Khalji had many Hakims in his royal court who were masters in this system of medicine.

Later, with the coming of the British into the country, like many systems, the Unani System of Medicine deteriorated and was contained to only certain areas.

ALAUDDIN KHALJI

It was under the Sultans of Delhi that the Unani System progressed.

PRINCIPLES

The principles of Unani medicine include:-

(1) ARKAN, or the elements

(2) MIZAJ, or temperament

(3) AKHLAT, or bodily humours

(4) AAZA, or organs and systems

(5) ARWAH, or vital spirit

(6) QUWA, or faculties/powers

(7) AFAAL, or functions.

These seven natural components maintain the balance in the natural constitution of the human body. Each-individual’s constitution has a self-regulating capacity or power, called 'TABIYAT' (or Mudabbira-e-badanvis medicatrix naturae in Latin), or to keep the seven components in equilibrium.

PREVENTION

Unani Practitioners always suggest people that:- "Prevention is always better than cure".

According to this system the internal balance of the Humours is affected due to mental stability and environmental factors. To prevent the imbalance of these humours Unani medicine emphasizes on 6 things:-

  • Hawa (Air)
  • Maakool wa Mashroob (Food and drink)
  • Harkat wa sukoon-e- badani (Body movement and rest)
  • Harkat wa sukoon-e- Nafsaani (Mental work and rest)
  • Naum wa Yaqza (Sleep and Wakefulness)
  • Istifraagh wa Ehtabaas (Retention and Evacuation)

Unani Medicine emphasizes on good diet all the time.

TREATMENT

This system of medicines based on theory of the presence of the elements in the human body. According to followers of Unani medicine, these elements are present in fluids and their balance leads to health and their imbalance leads to illness.

According to Unani practitioners, the failure of the body's ability to maintain its own health (Quwwat-e-Mudabbira-e-Bada), may lead to derangement of the normal equilibrium of the body's akhlat (humors).

Unani physicians give prime importance to diet and the state of digestion in a person, in both health and disease. Specific dietary regimens are recommended while treating patients according to their temperament. Proper diets are assumed to produce good humours (AKHLA Sadiyya) while improper ones produce bad humours (AKHLA Radiyya). Thus, the humoral imbalance can be corrected by medication coupled with proper diet.

39 of 50

Unani medicine system, manages any disease only after identifying its nature.

After diagnosing the disease, the following steps are taken:-

    • Izalae Sabab (elimination of cause)
    • Tadeele Akhlat (normalization of humors)
    • Tadeele Aza (normalization of tissues/organs)

This, is the way any disease or problem is treated through the Unani System of Medicine.

About Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a medical system based on the belief that the body can cure itself. It is based on something that brings on symptoms in a healthy person can, in a very small dose, treat an illness with similar symptoms.

This is meant to trigger the body’s natural defenses. The other theory underlying homeopathy is that of potentization. It's thought by practitioners of homeopathy that the more dilute an ingredient, the more potent it becomes. Potentization is process of increasing the power of homeopathic preparations by successive dilutions.

45 of 50

Discovery of Homeopathy

Homeopathy was first discovered in 1796 in Europe.

A German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, was translating a William Cullen book on medicine, when he came across how to treat malaria. He tired to research the medicine which cures Malaria, cinchona. He did this by self-application. This produced malaria-like symptoms in him and this experiment led to the postulate: “that which can produce a set of symptoms in a healthy individual, can treat a sick individual who is manifesting a similar set of symptoms.

Samuel Hahnemann originated a basic tenet that every individual reacts differently in health and disease. This was the basis of what homeopathy is today and it was known as “Principle of Similars” or “Like Cures Like”.

46 of 50

Its Spread in India

Homeopathy was introduced in India in the early 19th century. It first flourished in Bengal and then spread all over India.

Mahendra Lal Sircar was the first Indian to become a homeopathic physician. Many allopathic doctors followed his lead and started homoeopathic practice. The first Indian homeopathic college, the 'Calcutta Homeopathic Medical College' was established in 1881. This institution played a major role in popularising homeopathy throughout India.

Much later, in 1973, the Government of India recognised homeopathy as one of the national systems of medicine and set up the Central Council of Homeopathy (CCH) to regulate its education and practice.

47 of 50

Method of Preparation

Homeopathy uses animal, plant, mineral, and synthetic substances in its preparations.

Homeopathic pills are made from an inert substance (often sugars), upon which a drop of liquid homeopathic preparation is placed and allowed to evaporate.

Hahnemann claimed that undiluted doses caused reactions, and thus recommended that preparations be given at the lowest possible dose, as it was said to have a higher "potency", and be stronger and deeper-acting. The general method of dilution is serial dilution, where solvent is added to part of the previous mixture.

The other method is the "Korsakovian" method. In this method, the vessel in which the preparations are made is emptied, refilled with solvent, with the volume of fluid sticking to the walls of the vessel considered sufficient for the new batch.

Health Benefits

  • It is effective : Homeopathy is said to be extremely effective, in both acute and chronic conditions.
  • It is natural : Homeopathy is based on nature's principle of cure, namely Like Cures Like (The Law of Similars). The substances used in manufacturing its medicines are mainly derived from plants, minerals and animals.
  • It builds resistance in the body : Its treatments address the illness at the root level, thereby enhancing a resistance against the disease.
  • It can be used during any life stage : Homeopathic medicines are safe for all age groups and life stages because there is no risk of toxicity or side-effects.
  • It is safe : Its medicines are made from tiny amounts of proven healing substances. It does not have any allergic reactions or side-effects.
