What is ANZAC Day?

ANZAC Day is celebrated on April 25th. We celebrate in memory of the brave Australian, and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who fought one of the toughest battles in World War I, the capture of the Gallipoli Peninsula in modern day Turkey.

Why do we celebrate ANZAC Day?

World War One

World War One, also called The Great War was a tragic event in which European powers fought over the control of Europe. The Allied Forces (UK, France, Russia) took on the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire).

New Zealand and Australia fought on the side of the Allied Forces, and our job was to take the Gallipoli Peninsula - a very important location - as it would mean forces could easily attack the capital of the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople.

Taking Gallipoli

Taking the Gallipoli Peninsula turned out to be much, much harder than the ANZAC forces were prepared for, and after failing three attempts to reach the top of the hill, and suffering the losses of 5000 men the British and ANZAC forces were forced to retreat.

Even though they lost this battle, the bravery and courage of these soldiers was recognised and respected both by the Allied Forces, and the Central Powers

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day is celebrated both in New Zealand, and in Australia. One of the ways we celebrate it in NZ is to wear a red poppy flower, an international symbol of remembrance.

Another way it is celebrated here is with a Dawn Service - very early in the morning thousands of people gather at the Auckland War Memorial Museum to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have defended our country.
