Student Interactions in a Virtual Platform

A virtual bulletin board for students to curate a variety of media. Upload pictures and student-created files, link websites, and include text.

Students can connect with each other through voting and commenting. Families with a ‘hidden’ and unique link can view submissions for a virtual STEAM night.

As a teacher you are able to moderate student posts for quality.

A simple way for students to add a video response to an endless number of prompts, all determined by the teacher.

Flipgrid allows teachers to create a video message board for students with customizable security settings that help to protect student privacy.

My favorite thing...you can choose to moderate student posts. Very helpful to prevent shenanigans!

Tips for Success & Potential Pitfalls

Hosting a virtual STEAM Night is exciting, but also requires some preplanning.

15

Tips for Success:

  • Design a committee with one representative from each grade level, specialists, and administration. Meeting frequently to check-in & brainstorm is key.
  • Develop a clearly communicated plan with a series of dates to roll out to families is essential.
  • Create a shared document for staff that includes all links for handy access and accuracy.
  • Create a team committed to moderate all posts in your chosen virtual platforms.

Potential Pitfalls:

  • Virtual communications on a large scale are hard and easily misinterpreted.
  • Hosting a ‘live’ STEAM night with student participation during a livestream or set hours will be nearly impossible to troubleshoot technical issues within the given time frame. Frustrations will be evident from families and staff.
  • A firm timeframe for students to upload projects is tricky as each household is so different during COVID-19. Be sensitive to your population. Consider equitable access for all students as you make decisions.
