June 14, 1977 – Congressional Act
“… the Flag of thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, that the union be thirteen starts, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
May 1, 1795 – Second Flag Resolution by Congress
New stars and stripes be added to the flag when new states were admitted to the Union.
1818 – Third (and last) Congressional Flag Resolution
The number of stripes should remain 13, the number of stars should always match the number of states.
Any new star should be added on July 4 following a state’s admission.
October 29, 1912 – U.S. President William Howard Taft
Standardized the proportions and relative sizes of the elements of the flag.
In 1934 shades of color were standardized.
