Scoring RCMs/ACMs

Mobile Scoring

2025

2 of 30

Overview

  • Mobile Scoring has been the recommended method for DI scoring for the last several years. With mobile scoring, appraisers use their own mobile devices or personal computers to submit scores.
    • While mobile scoring was originally designed for mobile devices (phones and tablets), it should work just as well with laptop and desktop computers.
    • Tournaments may use mobile scoring for all challenges or just some challenges, if desired.

Changes for 2025

  • The following are changes made to mobile scoring for this season
    • Web-based Scoring program
      • A new, web-based scoring program is now available as an alternative to the classic scoring program. This new version may be accessed in the DI Resource Area via the Tournament Dashboard by clicking on the “Web Scoring Program” button. In addition to most of the features of the Classic Scoring Program, this version also includes:
        • Score, deduction, and team status changes are reflected in real-time when submitted via the Mobile Client or DI Resource Area.
        • The tournament status may be viewed by either Challenge/Level (similar to the Classic Scoring Program) or by Room
        • Preliminary Team rankings may be viewed even if scores aren’t complete for a challenge/level
      • The Web Scoring Program does not support the following:
        • Editing scores - scores should be edited in the DI Resource Area instead. The web scoring program will automatically receive these changes in real-time
        • Printing team manager scores (we recommend emailing these from the DI Resource Area instead)
        • Non-standard challenges (e.g. the Texas Extreme challenges)
      • Feedback and suggestions are always welcome

Changes for 2025 (continued)

    • Classic Scoring Program
      • With the addition of the new web-based scoring program, the traditional scoring program is now being referred to as the “Classic Scoring Program” or “CSP” to help distinguish between them. There are currently no plans to discontinue the Classic Scoring Program - both are planned to be supported for the foreseeable future.
      • The Tournament Wizard in the Classic Scoring Program now provides a new option labeled 'Create a new tournament from DIHQ'. This is a shortcut to quickly create a tournament from tournament information stored in the Destination Imagination Resource Area. This option pulls in the Tournament name, date, advancement, teams, appraisers, appraiser assignments, etc. without requiring any other interaction. To further customize the tournament (Challenge Colors, Tournament HTML Results settings, etc.) re-run the Tournament Wizard with the 'Modify current tournament' option. The previous tournament creation functionality has been renamed to 'Create a new tournament manually'.
      • Team status changes (e.g. team dropped) are now updated automatically when “Import Scores” is run.

Changes for 2025 (continued)

    • Mobile Client
      • Unlocking/locking team scores for an appraiser in the Resource Area will now be reflected in real time in the Mobile Client. Previously, a page reload in the Mobile Client was required to see these changes.
      • Adding, deleting, or modifying a deduction via the Resource Area or by another appraiser using the Mobile Client will now be reflected in real time in the Mobile Client. Previously, a page reload in the Mobile Client was required to see these changes.
      • The Mobile Client now supports additional languages for viewing score items and documents. The following languages are currently supported: English, Spanish, Turkish, and Polish.

Changes for 2025 (continued)

    • Miscellaneous
      • Regional tournament advancement rules can now be set in the DI Resource Area. Affiliate tournament advancement rules are automatically set for tournaments. This allows advancement rules to be used for final scores within the Web Scoring Program and allows importing into the Classic Scoring Program when using the new “Create new tournament from DIHQ” option.

Considerations

  • Appraisers use the Mobile Client on their personal devices for scoring.
    • The Mobile Client is a mobile web page - not an app. Nothing needs to be installed on the device to use it.
    • Almost any device with a web browser will work: cell phone, tablet, laptops, etc.
    • Testing has been performed on a variety of devices including older devices and it should work on most devices still in use.
  • Mobile Client and Resource Area are authoritative
    • Please note the arrows of data flow on the previous diagram. Importing scores, appraisers, etc. into the Scoring Program will overwrite most local changes that were made directly within the Scoring Program
    • When using mobile scoring and the Classic Scoring Program, we highly recommend changes (such as scoring, deductions, appraiser assignments, etc.) be made in the Mobile Client, where possible, or in the Resource Area and then use one of the import functions within the Scoring Program.

Pre-tournament Setup

For most tournaments, much of the pre-tournament setup is performed by the Tournament Director or others involved in your tournament in the DI Resource Area. This guide assumes the following actions have already been performed:

  • Collected the teams and enabled them to fill out online forms
  • Decided on the rooms and placed teams in these rooms
  • Entered the appraisers that will appraise in these rooms
  • Challenge Masters have assigned items for the appraisers to score
  • Instant Challenges have been chosen and assigned to IC rooms

If any of these items have been assigned to the Scoring RCM/ACM, additional information is available here:

Pre-tournament Setup (continued)

1. Review the state of the tournament in the DI Resource Area from the Tournament Dashboard (Tournament => Dashboard)

The left column shows the state of the tournament:

  • The number of teams and their distributions across the challenges
  • The number of appraiser rooms (TC and IC)
  • The number of appraisers and how many have yet to be assigned jobs
  • The number of Instant Challenges that have been assigned to IC rooms
  • The number of scores that have been entered

The buttons under the Actions column on the Tournament Dashboard may be used to:

  • See more detail about teams, rooms, appraisers, etc.
  • Make changes to the items above
    • When making changes, be sure to coordinate the changes with the Tournament Director and others

Pre-tournament Setup (continued)

  1. Advancement rules
    1. For regional tournaments, set the advancement rules for your tournament using the “Scoring Program Settings” button from the Tournament Dashboard. Your Tournament Director or Affiliate Scoring ACM should have this information. Affiliate tournament advancement rules are set automatically in the DI Resource Area by DIHQ.
    2. Advancement rules are set using a comma-separated list of integers where each integer indicates the number competing teams needed to advance N teams to the next level of competition. For example, “1,3,6” would designate:- 1 team would advance if 1 or 2 teams are competing in that level- 2 teams would advance if 3-5 teams are competing in that level- 3 teams would advance if 6 or more teams are competing in that level

Pre-tournament Setup (continued)

  • Determine which scoring program you’re planning to use- In 2025, a new web-based scoring program (WSP) has been introduced as an alternative to the classic scoring program (CSP). Both versions import tournament information and scores from the DI Resource Area and can be used to score the tournament. Below are characteristics of both to aid in choosing which to use:Classic Scoring Program (CSP)- Needs to be installed on the computer; requires Java to be installed on the computer- Supports Paper Scoring- Supports non-standard challenges (e.g. Texas Extreme)Web Scoring Program (WSP)- No installation required - can be launched from the DI Resource Area Tournament Dashboard- Does not support Paper Scoring- Does not support non-standard challenges (e.g. Texas Extreme)- Does not support printing of team manager score sheetsA tournament may use either or both versions. Follow the instructions under 3A and/or 3B based on your decision.

Web Scoring Program (WSP) notes

  • Reload Web Scoring Program webpage
    • The Web Scoring Program was designed to operate mostly without intervention. However, if issues do occur (for example, after a network outage), simply reloading the web page will reset the application, reload the data, and should resolve many simple issues
  • Compare scores
    • While significant testing has been performed on the Web Scoring Program, an option is available to compare the results between the Web Scoring Program and the Classic Scoring Program to insure consistency by following the steps below:1. After you have a complete tournament in the Classic Scoring Program, choose “Send Tournament Results to DIHQ” from the File menu on the main summary window.2. In the Web Scoring Program, choose “Report Results” from the menu and click “Compare”. This will display any differences in the results between the Classic Scoring Program and the Web Scoring Program.

Classic Scoring Program (CSP) - re-importing teams

  • To import additional teams…
    • Quit the classic scoring program and relaunch
    • Use the Tournament Wizard and select ‘Modify current tournament’
    • Proceed as in step 3B.b.ii
  • To delete/update existing teams…
    • Re-importing teams from DI website will not update teams previously imported in the current version of the scoring program.
    • To update previously imported teams, you should:
      • If the number of changes are small, update or delete the team manually within the scoring program, or
      • Create a new local copy of the tournament by using the Tournament Wizard and follow the instructions in step 3B above. Please note that the newly created tournament will not contain any local changes (including manually entered scores)

22 of 30

Classic Scoring Program (CSP) - re-importing appraisers

  • To update appraisers…
    • Choose the File -> Import Appraisers from DIHQ option
    • By default, the scoring program will skip challenges where appraisers have already been imported. To force an update, select the appropriate checkbox(s) under the “Import?” column.
    • Note: Please note that re-importing appraisers who already had scores entered could cause those scores to be lost.

23 of 30

Classic Scoring Program (CSP) troubleshooting

  • Try re-creating your tournament in the classic scoring program using step 3B above if you receive errors in the scoring program and can’t find an obvious cause
    • Since team, appraiser, and score information is stored in the Resource Area, this is the easiest way to do a “reset” in the scoring program and tends to solve 95% of issues encountered in the scoring program
    • These issues are most commonly caused when appraiser information is changed in the Resource Area after it was imported in the classic scoring program causing them to get out of sync.

24 of 30

Mobile Client - Appraiser Access

  • Appraisers can access the Mobile Client in several ways:
    • (Recommended) Email or TXT a link - In the Resource Area, go to Tournaments -> Mobile Scoring, click on the pencil icon in the Appraisers column, choose an appropriate time frame under “Link sent can access tournament”, and press Email All (for Email) or click the phone icon under “text access” for each appraiser (to TXT a link).
    • Email address and password - Appraisers should go to https://resources.destinationimagination.org/score_client/index.html to authenticate. If an appraiser does not know their password, they should go to the Resource Area login (https://resources.destinationimagination.org/resources.php/auth/login) and request a password reset.

25 of 30

Mobile Client - Appraiser Access

  • Appraiser Early access
    • It is recommended that you give appraisers access to the Mobile Client several days prior to your tournament to make sure they can access it and to become familiar with the functionality.
    • We also recommend you place your tournament in “Mobile Client Test Mode” under Edit Tournament (Tournaments -> Dashboard -> Edit Tournament). This will display a “Test Mode” banner within the Mobile Client and will allow appraisers to enter test scores for teams that have not had their prep checklist approved (see later slide concerning online prep checklist)
    • Prior to your tournament, you can turn off “Mobile Client Test Mode” and reset any scores they may have entered with Edit Tournament (Under Tournaments -> Dashboard -> Edit Tournament).
      • Change the state to “Setup”.
      • Uncheck “Mobile Client Test Mode”
      • If scores were entered, the count will show next to “Scores Entered” and a “Reset” button will appear next to the count. Click the “Reset” button next to Scores Entered to reset the scores. Warning: a “Reset” button next to “Appraiser Count” or “Teams Scheduled” will Reset those items if clicked - be careful to note the location of the “Reset” button before you click it.
      • Change the state to “Open” to allow new scores to be entered

26 of 30

Mobile Client - Appraiser Tips

  • Scoring items
    • Appraisers will only see the scoring items they’re assigned.
  • Deductions / Comments
    • Only one appraiser should enter deductions or comments per score item
  • Error checking
    • The Mobile Client should automatically check for most errors

27 of 30

Mobile Client - Appraiser Tips

  • After entering scores, appraisers can:
    • Cancel - this will discard any changes made to that team
    • Save - this will save any scores/deductions/comments for that team to the Resource Area but they will not be imported into the scoring program. This is useful for appraisers who want to hold the first several scores to level set or if the appraiser hasn’t completed their scoring for this team (e.g. may be considering a deduction).
    • Submit - only available after all scores for this team have been entered by the appraiser and there are no errors. This will save and submit the scores to the Resource Area and those scores are now available to be imported into the Scoring Program. This team’s scores for that appraiser become locked after submitting. The Head Appraiser, Challenge Master, or Scoring Challenge Master can unlock the scores if changes are needed.
  • Note: Raw scores cannot be processed by the score room or sent to team managers until Appraisers hit ‘Submit’. Appraisers should be encouraged to ‘Submit’ their scores as soon as they can.

28 of 30

Mobile Client - What could go wrong?

  • Network disruption
    • The Mobile Client will hold information and continue to allow data entry until the network is restored or the device is moved to a better location
    • Phones and other devices can use either cellular data or Wi-Fi to access mobile scoring
  • Device fail
    • In the case where a device fails, the appraiser should be able to move to a different device. Only scores that were not saved/submitted or were in the process of being transmitted would need to be re-entered.
    • Mobile Scoring was not designed to be used by the same user on multiple devices simultaneously. Doing so may produce unpredictable results.

29 of 30

Head Appraisers, Challenge Masters, Scoring CMs

  • Head Appraisers, Challenge Masters, and Score Room Challenge Masters can use the Resource Area -> Tournaments -> manage scoring to:
    • Monitor the progress of appraisers entering scores
    • Review / Edit appraiser scores
    • Unlock (unsubmit) an appraiser’s scores so the appraiser can make changes to them after hitting submit
    • Review stickies
    • Review raw scores and stickies with Team Manager and email them to the Team Manager
    • Mark a team as “dropped”

30 of 30

Common Questions

  • Do I need to mark which appraisers are using mobile and which are using paper?
    • No - the ‘using paper’ and ‘using mobile’ settings are purely for documentation purposes - they do not control any functionality within mobile scoring
  • Why would you add a comment to a score?
    • Comments are used as…
      • A way to record a message for the team that will show up with their raw scores
      • Record a reason for a zero score on a subjective item
        • Some tournaments require this for all zero scored subjective items
