Goals of the SNIFS Sounding Rocket

  • Study the high frequency dynamics – energy and mass flow – in the chromosphere and transition regions associated with small (nanoflares, spicules, RBE/RREs) and large (solar flare) energy releases.
    • H I, 121.6nm, log(T):4.2; Si III, 120.65nm, log(T):4.8; O V, 121.83nm, log(T):5.3
  • Prove new technology
    • Mirrorlet Integral Field Spectrograph, 4MP CMOS detector and software
  • Participate in the Solar Flare 2024 Campaign (FOXSI-4 and Hi-C Flare)

SNIFS Instrument

  • One instrument, two channels (‘RBE/Primary’ and ‘Flare/Secondary’)
    • Single telescope focuses on 2x Mirrorlets
    • ‘Flare’ channel is bonus and optional
      • Data rate, cost, schedule, etc. de-scope
  • Mirrorlet is the enabling technology
    • Mirrorlet replaces the slit in a slit spectrograph

Technology: Integral Field Spectrograph

  • SNIFS is an all-reflective Integral Field �Spectrograph (IFS)
    • Simultaneous 2 spatial and 1 spectral dimensions �without any moving parts
    • High cadence spectral imaging as no scanning �required – now at 1 second cadence!
    • High spectral resolution over a limited spectral range
      • Multiple emission lines and Doppler Shifts and thermal broadening
