Greetings!

Welcome to the Leaders in Literacy Annual Writing Competition 2022, brought to you by Leaders in Literacy! Whether you're a seasoned writer or enjoy expressing your thoughts through pen and paper, this competition is catered to you. We offer multiple writing categories for the competition, as well as separate divisions, ensuring that your piece is as best as it can be. Lastly, in order to ensure that you are prepared for the competition, our team will be hosting a Writing Workshop held by Alice Yang.

The Theme of the Year for the 2022 Summer Writing Competition Is Jealousy

Categories

  • Personal narrative
    • Write about a meaningful life experience in under 800 words.
  • Original poem
    • One page limit, single spaced, font size 12, Times New Roman.
  • Persuasive essay
    • Write about your stance on a topic and support it with evidence in under 800 words.
    • The topic can be taken from literature, real world issues, or historical events.

* All writing should have the Theme of the Year included, or include elements from the theme.

Prizes

Senior Division (Grades 8-10):

For each category,

  • First place - $25 Indigo Gift Card
  • Second Place - $15 Indigo Gift Card

Junior Division (Grades 5-7):

For each category,

  • First place - $25 Indigo Gift Card
  • Second Place - $15 Indigo Gift Card

There will also be 2 honorary mentions per division. Please ensure that you have finished your designated grade.

Writing Workshop Led by Alice Yang

Coming to you virtually on July 20th at 7pm!

We’ll be discussing what makes a good piece of writing! This workshop is for all ages to find some inspiration and guidance with their writing.

Alice Yang graduated from Old Scona Academic and is currently attending Harvard College as a undergraduate. She writes constantly as a part of the Harvard Kennedy School, where she is exploring a future in policy.

Details will be posted on our website by July 15th.

Rules

  • Only one submission per category for each person.
  • Submissions must be completed individually and plagiarism will not be tolerated.
  • The submission period will be between July 8-August 20.
  • Winners will be announced on August 24.
  • All winners’ submissions will be published on our website!

How to check Word Count

Google Documents:

  1. On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
  2. To find the count of words, characters, and pages, at the top of the page, click Tools. Word count.

Microsoft Word:

Word automatically counts the number of pages and words in your document and displays them on the status bar at the bottom of the workspace. If you don't see the word count in the status bar, right-click the status bar and click Word Count.

Apple Pages:

Click View > Show Word Count from the menu bar. When the box appears at the bottom of your Pages document, you'll see the word count.
