What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual Enrollment is a unique program that allows high school students to earn college credit while simultaneously earning credit towards their high school diploma.

Why Dual Enrollment?

Ease the transition from high school to college
Helps students become more comfortable with being in a college setting
Allows the student to develop collegiate study habits
Provides beneficial student practices that may differ from high school experiences

The Benefits of Dual Enrollment?

Free tuition, textbooks, and mandatory fees (course specific supplies, lab fees, & transportation ARE NOT INCLUDED)
Students can attend classes 3 semesters per year (Fall, Spring, Summer)
Students can take up to 15 credit hours per semester
Dual Enrollment courses do not count against the future HOPE Scholarship/Grant cap hours
Allows students a head start in the college experience and college credit
Saves money towards a college degree
No residency requirements

DE Funds Cover:

Tuition, textbooks, and fees are FREE! Course specific fees (lab fees) & other miscellaneous fees are not covered.

Only 15 hours of credit hours will be paid per semester. (12 hours max credit per semester at Brenau University)

These hours do NOT take away from your HOPE hours!

Legislative Updates (Effective Summer 2020)

Participation and funding is capped at 30 semester or 45 quarter hours* for all first-time students effective Summer term 2020 and beyond.
After reaching the 30 semester hour funding cap, a student may choose to continue pursuing college credit through a joint or dual enrollment arrangement at his or her own expense. (Self-pay form)
Students in the 9th grade are not eligible to participate in the Dual Enrollment funding Program.
All eligible 10th Graders may enroll in approved Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) courses listed on the Course Directory at a participating technical institution only.
10th Graders who have a minimum SAT score of 1200 or minimum ACT composite score of 26 in a single test administration, may enroll in any approved course listed on the Course Directory at an eligible participating postsecondary institution.

Note: GSFC must have the required test score(s) in the Dual Enrollment system prior to the student’s Dual Enrollment funding Application being approved by the high school or home study.

Legislative Updates (Effective Summer 2020)

Eligible students may take any approved Dual Enrollment courses listed on the Course Directory, at an eligible participating postsecondary institution (USG, TCSG or private).
Effective Summer term 2020 (FY2021), a student may not receive funding for the same course twice. Courses taken Summer term 2020 or later cannot be retaken and receive Dual Enrollment funding. Courses taken prior to Summer 2020 are not included.
Effective Summer term 2020 (FY2021), students become ineligible to continue to receive Dual Enrollment funding for future terms after their 2nd course withdrawal.

Courses

Students are required to take classes on the approved dual enrollment course list from GADOE. It can be accessed at https://www.gafutures.org.

Full Time College Status vs Part Time College Status

Part time status is a minimum of 6 classes between BHS and Dual Enrollment college.
Full time status is a minimum of 12 credit hours and a maximum of 15 hours all taken on the college campus.

A 3-hour college course (1 semester) = 1 credit at BHS (2 semesters)

Ex. A student is required to take only one semester of English at the college to equal two semesters of English at BHS.

Local districts have flexibility on additional requirements.

Grading

All college grades will be recorded on the high school transcript. Colleges use letter grades. The following scale will be used to convert the letter grade to a numeric grade.

A = 95 B= 85 C = 75 D = 70

Ten points will be added to dual enrollment core classes and will be included in the Academic and Cumulative GPA’s. Ex. English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language
Ten points will be added to dual enrollment core elective classes and will be included in the Academic and Cumulative GPA’s. Ex. Psychology, Sociology, Computer Science
Ten points will NOT be awarded for non-core elective classes BUT will be included in the Cumulative GPA . Ex. Art History, Music Appreciation, PE, Biology Lab
A letter grade of D will be transcribed as 70 with no additional points added

American Literature EOC Update

- Students are now required to take the American Literature EOC if they take it as a dual enrollment course at the college.

- The End of Course Test must count as 20% of the student's final grade. For DE students, the grade earned from the college will count as 80% of the total grade, and the EOC will make up the remaining 20%.

- As of 2021-22 school year, no other EOCs are required for dual enrollment students. I.e.: US History

Dual Enrollment Option B Students

Designed for students who have a career path chosen and will be ready to begin work by earning either: 1) two Technical Certificates in one of several eligible career pathways, 2) a technical diploma or 3) an associate degree while simultaneously completing the 9 required high school courses to earn a high school diploma. These students will graduate with the necessary credential to move on to their chosen path in the world of work.

Dual Enrollment - Application Steps

Review the Dual Enrollment PowerPoint with a parent.
Complete an online application with the college.
Request an official transcript at https://www.gafutures.org.
Testing:

Submit official standardized test scores (PSAT, SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer depending on the college).

For classification purposes only, US Citizens must submit verification of lawful presence (driver's license). Not required for Non-US Citizens.
Complete the Dual Enrollment student participation agreement form at https://www.gafutures.org. The parent will complete the participation agreement after the student has completed their form.
Sign and review with your guardian the Dual Enrollment BHS Expectations form.
Once accepted, contact your college dual enrollment advisor for a scheduling appointment.
**Schedule an appointment with your BHS counselor if the college requires you to meet or to discuss courses before college registration.

Student Expectations

Students are expected to:

conduct themselves in a cooperative manner.

attend all scheduled classes on time & complete assigned work on time.

communicate with professor prior to any classes missed and gain permission.

understand that college advisors/professors only talk to students.
