Tips for Reading with Your Child at Home
24
Children learn from reading AND being read to. They learn a lot from listening to fluent readers.
25
2. Choose the Right Books
Choosing the right books will help your reader feel comfortable and confident.
Ask yourself:
Don’t rule out “fun” books like comics, graphic novels, and picture books. Reading is reading!
26
3. Make Reading Fun!
Children learn to read by reading a lot! Make reading fun and set yourself up for reading success!
Encourage reading with incentives!
Use reading logs and charts.
Read to your child or take turns.
Choose a cozy spot for reading, or read on the go!
Know when to stop.
27
28
4. Ask Questions
When reading to your child, talk about the illustrations, storyline, and characters. Read the text and point to each word, bringing the story off the page with a dramatic reading style. Ask questions about the story and to predict what will happen next.

5. Make Reading Part of Your Routine
Create routines around reading to ensure that your child is reading daily for at least 20 minutes.
Choose a time each day to set aside as quiet reading time. (ex. after breakfast)
Turn off the TV and devices during this time and limit distractions. Get the whole family reading!
