Associates of Arts, Science and Applied Science

Carl Wunsche will add Associates of Arts, Science and Applied Science tracks to its already rigorous academic program beginning with the 2022-2023 school year.

These tracks will give incoming freshmen the opportunity to take college courses starting their second semester of their first year of high school and complete their associates degree by the time they graduate high school.

They will also earn a multi-disciplinarian endorsement along with their pathway endorsement ( Public service, STEM, Business and Industry).

What is an Associates of Arts Degree?

• The Associate of Arts Degree (AA) is a two-year program that is equivalent to completing freshman and sophomore years at a four-year college or university
• . The Associate of Arts is not typically career-oriented. It offers a general liberal arts education and prepares students to pursue a bachelor's degrees at a four-year college or university. Areas of study typically include history, literature, life science, math, psychology and statistics, among other topics.

• An Associate of Arts (AA) degree usually requires the completion of 60 semester hours of coursework. Typically, the Associate of Arts degree has general education and elective components.
• General education courses, or "core" courses, are completed during the first year of the program. Once all general education courses have been completed, students are able to select elective courses that are more in line with their interests, educational track, or career goals.

Advantages of Earning an Associate of Arts (AA) Degree

• There are several benefits to earning an Associate of Arts degree. One of the biggest is cost. Earning an AA degree at an accredited community college is typically far less expensive than earning the same credits at a four-year college. And, if after completing your AA degree you end up transferring to the same four-year college you would have attended as a freshman and sophmore, at the end of the day you'll end up with the same bachelor's degree–just at a much lower cost.

The Associates of Science degree

• Learners pursue majors related to business, science, or math when working towards an AS degree. Specific examples include business administration, criminal justice, cybersecurity, health science, and more.
• Most associate of science programs require about 60-65 credits for graduation, and students can complete the degree in two years. Typical core courses include a college readiness seminar along with general education electives in areas like English, math, social studies, and art.

Associates of Applied Science in Paralegal

• . The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree prepares graduates to enter a career immediately after graduation.
• Employment Outlook and Salary Info

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicted that employment of paralegals and legal assistants will increase by 10% from 2019-2029 (). In May 2019, the BLS reported that the median annual salary for these professionals was $51,740.

The Cost of taking classes through Lonestar to earn an associates degree

• If student receives free or reduced lunch classes are free during the school year.
• For the school year 2021-2022, the cost per class is $72
• During the summer, classes are buy one get one free

(Example English 1301 and US History 1301- $72)

There may be additional charges for fees and books

Student who choose to follow the associates of arts track will take the TSIA (elar) during the fall semester and follow the course work listed.

• If you have native Spanish speakers who take the AP Spanish test, they can earn up to 14 LSC credits. They would need to submit the Prior Learning Application to LSC to be awarded credit.

• Students must maintain a minimum of “C” in order to stay in the dual credit program. Unless the class is offered on campus, the grade may not show on report until the end of the semester.

Criteria for acceptance

Meets or Masters on Reading/English and Math/Algebra 1

85 plus in Core courses ( English, Science, Math, Social, Studies) for Semester 1 and Q3 of 8^th grade year

90% attendance for school year ( if there are circumstances that kept student from meeting this attendance requirement such as COVID or hospitalization this will be taken into consideration.)

Preparing for Associates of Arts, Science and Applied Science

1. Complete the application for Cohort- deadline for application is June 1
2. Get accepted into program (You will receive a notice of acceptance this summer no later than July 27.)
3. Attend Freshmen Orientation August 3-4 ( This will be for all incoming freshmen but part of the orientation will be with Lonestar College Advisors).
4. Complete the Lonestar Application
5. Start Fall classes
6. Take the TSI by the end of the first semester

Finally

• Students not accepted into the cohort will still be able to take College credit classes and could still possible earn an associates by the time they graduate. Generally these students will start after their sophomore year.
• Students who are not able to continue with the Cohort may be taken out and placed in their regular classes.
• College Professors are not employed by SpringISD. They may not call you to let you know that your child is failing as is expected of our teachers. As parents, you will not be able to call the college professor but will have go through the child counselors for any issues that need to be resolved.

• Most classes will be done online. Students will have these classes built into their schedules.
• We have on campus teachers for Science, English and US History
• Students will be allowed to attend classes on the Lonestar campus when they become student drivers.
