Design Report

2023 vs. 2024

• 7 pages total: 4 text, 3 diagrams
• Separate sustainability report
• Specific required calculations
• No header or Table of Contents allowed

• 9 pages total: any format
• Includes sustainability section in the design report
• Sustainability content is open-ended
• Header and Table of Contents are allowed, but not scored

Design Report Reminders:

• There are 3 required diagrams in your report
• Reports are used to asses design readiness and assign judging groups for competition

Design Report dos/don’ts

Do:

• Check total number of pages
• Cover all categories in the scoring sheet
• Highlight what it new and what is reused
• *reused systems should still be described in the report!
• Use diagrams to your advantage
• Be honest about what is in progress and what will be complete when presented on track

Don't:

• Re-use the same report from a previous year
• Cover project management or team structure unless it effects design
• Submit in the wrong format

Design Event dos/don’ts

Do:

• Bring visual aids
• Point out who can answer what questions when you introduce the team
• Bring backup stats/calculations/diagrams
• Be prepared to talk to judges one on one
• Know about reused systems from previous years or teams
• Focus on why design decisions were made and how they impact performance, cost, weight, etc.

Don't:

• Plan to present a sideshow
• Give a car overview for more than 5 min
• Crowd the judges with more team members than are talking
• Be late!
• This WILL cut into your presentation time

Other Considerations

Design Spec Sheet:

• Gives a technical overview of your car
• Submit along with Design Report
• Not scored, but must be completed
• A penalty may be given if no or incomplete spec sheet is submitted

Design Event Reminders:

• The posted schedule cannot be changed, so plan your tech inspections around your design time
• Design scoring about the WHY and the HOW, not necessarily the most impressive design
