Humanities

“The humanities are a broad range of academic disciplines that study human culture, including history, literature, language, philosophy, art, religion, and more. In middle school, humanities classes often combine English and social studies to help students develop critical thinking and creativity skills. Humanities classes in middle school can help students:

  • Build a sense of self
  • Students can develop a strong sense of self and compassion for others through the books they read, writing projects, and historical topics they study.
  • Explore the human experience
  • Students can learn about what it means to be human, including how people think, feel, and act.
  • Develop communication skills
  • Students can learn to communicate their ideas thoughtfully and fluently.
  • Explore the connection between disciplines
  • Students can learn how different disciplines, like reading, writing, and history, blend together” (ASCD).
