Safeguarding our Tomorrow's Future
Climate change refers to long term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts maybe natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle.
The climate change in Northern Nigeria has been irregular over the years leading to extreme dry or raining dry season. This has led to seasons of drought and excess flood which has affected agricultural activities and led to loss of lives and properties. On our own part, we will be focusing on rain invariability which leads to drought and flooding.
Subsequently, these two issues cause so many hardship for farmers due to the level of damages that is always done to their crops.
OUR PERSPECTIVE
This challenge has inspired us to address the issues and woes faced by our farmers in our various communities due to rain invariability such as loss of crops, inability to predict the right time to plant their crops.
OUR OBJECTIVE
We intend to address the challenges posed by rain invariability and its effects by coming up with an app that helps farmers with an almost accurate weather forecast, knowledge on the right seed to be used. the right time to plant, the right seeds to plant and the appropriate time to plant it. Furthermore, we are looking at partnering with NASA in order to effectively achieve our goals,
Climate irregularity in northern Nigeria has resulted in reduced quality and quantity of crops which has resulted in the hike of food prices across the entire nation.
According to a report by ThisDay Live, Farmers have lost 1.7mmts of grains to drought in 2021 in Katsina,which was followed up by another report by Gazzette Nigeria stating that rice farmers in North-East Nigeria have reported low yields in the 2021 harvest season, blaming it on climate change which continues to shrink water availability in arid regions of the country.
In Taraba State, it’s been reported that thousands of rice farmers in five local government areas have lost their farms to what some of them described as most devastating flooding that swept farms on both sides of River Benue, covering over 250 kilometres from Adamawa to Nasarawa State.
This is a mobile application that will provide farmers with an almost accurate climatic prediction for the next production season. With access to some of NASA’s earth data resources, the app will be able to foresee a flood or drought situation before it occurs. This would grant both the government and local farmers with enough time to put preventive measures in place.
They will also be able to get access to recommendations on crop varieties that have been genetically modified to withstand these climatic conditions and where to get their seeds.
The app comes with access to the websites and contact informations of government agencies and agricultural organizations that partner up to help and grant aid to indigenous farmers.
Solution
Hackathon Journey
Our journey started on the 29th of September, 2022. We met physically for the first time on the 1st of October, 2022. We started by introducing each other and we began to brainstorm on our topic. in the middle of this, there were disagreements and later compromises in order for us to achieve our aims and objectives. On the second day of the hackathon, we began to shoot videos for our project, made the slides for our demo presentation. Overall, it has been a challenging journey but we have tried our best, scaled through the hurdles and we have hopes emerging as the winners.
