IS COMMUNITY BUILDING IN THE CLASSROOM

Goal

    • Students are introduced to Ocean Discovery & create connections
    • Students establish belief that they are�a unique individual contributing to a community of science
    • Students are introduced to the habitat �or field of study

Overview

    • Visit 1-2 schools, usually Wednesdays, �for 1 hour lessons per class
    • Transport supplies classroom to classroom
    • Hours will vary, but will fall between 7am-1pm

Shift Start Time & Supply Pick Up

    • Arrive at Lab 45 minutes before start of 1st class
      • Can drive into parking lot (if garage is working)

    • What you need:
      • Supply bin
      • Poster carrier (if applicable)
      • Rosters + Cover Letters*

    • Everything will be in Transitional Storage
      • If arriving before building opens (8am), do NOT attempt to go into main building. Alarm will go off!
      • Check supplies before leaving, refill as needed

    • Arrive at school ~30 minutes prior to lesson

PARKING

        • Street Parking (caution street sweeping)
        • Parking Lots
          • Visitor Parking Spaces

OFFICE CHECK-IN

        • Follow school-specific protocol
        • Always sign in/out with full name
        • Double check classroom assignments
        • Ask office staff for directions to classrooms

    • Quietly enter classroom 3-5 minutes early to begin set up

    • Get Roster + Cover Letter signed and Collect Ocean Discovery Waivers*
      • Indicate students who are absent
      • Scan for SDUSD school permission slips
    • Load PowerPoints & Media on class Smart Board
      • Permission to use the teacher’s computer

      • Divide the room in half for activity check-ins

Switching classes

    • 5-10 minutes between classes
    • Support should pack supplies away once done being used for easy transition
    • Reset in new classroom

Breaks between classes

    • Be respectful in hallways
    • Bring snacks/lunch for days with longer breaks
    • If working >5 hours, lunch break will be built into schedule

Travel between schools

    • Rare
    • Clean up as fast as possible from 1st school
    • Travel time is allotted for during scheduling, ~30 min between classes

Clean Up

    • Return all items to Transitional Storage & re-stock bins

    • Take note of any supplies running low/broken/missing

    • Return waivers (labeled) & rosters to black box

    • Check out with floor lead – let them know of anything needing to be replaced, teacher communications, etc.

Troubleshooting

    • Lesson time
      • Occasionally, teachers will forget you are coming or have a conflict they forgot about
      • Adjust timing accordingly
      • Contact Floor Lead if needed, Manager will reschedule with teacher.

    • Supplies
      • If running low on supplies while on campus, contact Floor Lead.
      • Tech – If Smart Board or media isn’t working, run lesson without. Use whiteboard/chart paper/physical posters.
