FOCUS CAMPAIGNS

Campaigns shall be strategically focused, with specific goals to advance socialism and build power for the working class. They should involve organizing for power and mass mobilization of WCU's membership and the broader working class in San Joaquin County. Campaigns represent significant long-term commitments of time and resources by WCU. At any given time, WCU shall maintain no more than two active priority campaigns.

Goals of Working class unity

  • Build solidarity among the SJC working class
    • “Solidarity is not the same as support. To experience solidarity, we must have a community of interests, shared beliefs, and goals around which to unite to build Sisterhood. Support can be occasional. It can be given and just as easily withdrawn. Solidarity requires sustained, ongoing commitment.” – Bell Hooks
  • Rebuild the social fabric – socialism is not just about elections and policy
  • Through collective organization, we can create mass protagonists

PROPOSAL FOR FOCUS CAMPAIGN: FREE PALESTINE

  • Proposal: The Free Palestine Focus Campaign should primarily be focused on three strategies:
    • Specifically targeting Rep. Josh Harder for his stances & votes
    • Pulling people away from the Democratic Party and building capacity/coalitions
    • Developing new methods and strategies for building working class power

13 of 27

Target Josh harder

  • Educate the public about Josh’s role in Congress and enabling Israel
  • Develop tactics that can be used against enemies in the future
    • Researching who his support structures are
    • Undermining leadership of other organizations/institutions that may support him by reaching out to the rank-and-file membership
      • North Valley Labor Federation has endorsed Harder again
        • SEIU 2015, AFSME, CWA, UHW, Teamsters
  • Building coalitions outside of left-wing circles

14 of 27

Building a new party

  • Voting for the lesser evil has not worked for over half a century here
    • Both major parties represent different shades of capitalist interests
    • Democrats shift to the right, inadvertently strengthening right-wing forces
    • Popular fronts give them credibility and cost us credibility
  • We need an independent socialist movement
    • One that does not compromise its principles in the face of limited and false choices presented within a capitalist framework
    • Requires setting goals that are years down the line, not the next election cycle
  • We need international solidarity between socialist movements/parties to prevent ongoing and future genocides

15 of 27

New methods and strategies

  • Previous anti-war movements, from SDS and the Vietnam War and the large anti-Iraq War protests, were largely unsuccessful
    • In the end, the Vietnamese defeated the United States, and the United States was forced to come to a mutual agreement with the Taliban
  • Foreign policy has moved further and further away from public control
  • We cannot keep repeating dead rituals
  • Analysis > Action
    • The United States has not slowed down Israel even a little so far

16 of 27

Dead rituals

  • Public meetings and rallies
  • Selling newspapers
  • Petitions
  • Leafleting
  • Pickets
  • Lobbying legislatures
  • Pacificist marching
  • Random sit-ins and street closures
  • Withholding tax
  • Posting online
  • Using the media
  • Running in elections
  • Solidarity campaigns
