What is Outcome Based Education?

By the end of the educational experience, each student should have achieved the goal. To achieve the above, OBE follows these three approaches mainly.

  • Theory of Education
  • Systematic structure of Education
  • Specific approach to instructional practices

Around 20 countries have adopted to this system with prime aim to train students with

  • Life skills
  • Basic skills
  • Professional and Vocational sills
  • Intellectual skills
  • Interpersonal and personal skills.

OBE is successful due to

  • Clarity – Focus on the outcome of student
  • Flexibility – Instructors can structure their lessons
  • Comparison – Between institutions
  • Involvement – by students and they are aware of their expectations

Drawbacks of OBE

  • No clear understanding of outcome – By outlining specific outcomes, a holistic approach of learning is lost
  • Assessment Problems – No time bound assessments and difficult to be objective
  • Generality – no measurable, observable outcomes
  • Involvement – if there is no involvement by parents, students and society no improvement
