Course Description

This course serves as an introduction to teaching and schooling in our American democracy. We explore important questions about the form and function of schooling and deepen our understanding of what it means to develop as transformative teachers within our current K12 educational landscape.

ED 200: Pre-work

  1. Write a Where I am From Poem using the format provided. Consider your lived experiences and tell your story.
  2. Develop your Philosophy of Education iteration
  3. Read & Log ideas and quotes from the readings in the reading log (Make a Copy). We will reference and utilize these readings to frame our thinking about schooling for class on June 18th.

  4. Preview the following readings, we will engage these readings on identity in class on June 18. These readings will eventually need to be included in your reading log but are optional to be completed for the first class.

Attendance Policy

  • You may NOT miss any class due to the nature of this program.

  • In the rare case of emergency, a Resident that misses more than 1 day will be subject to repeat the course, regardless of the reason for absence.

  • Whenever a Resident is absent, they must set up a meeting with their instructor during office hours to make up/discuss the content of the day.

Attendance Policy - Frequent Questions

  • What if I have to get a TB test, Livescan, get a form filled out?
    • Please do this on non course days. You will be marked for a partial day absence if you miss class for this reason.
  • What if I have an emergency and unable to attend class?
    • Email your instructor ASAP. They will mark you absent with a reason of illness or emergency. Follow up with your instructor immediately upon feeling better to catch up on the missing work.
  • What if there is an incident on my way to class?
    • Email or call your instructor ASAP.
    • Find a peer in your course and text or email them so that they can convey your message to the instructor
  • What if I have a pre-planned activity that involves a day of absence?
    • Each day of the course is crucial and required. Email your instructor and clinical director in advance, to arrange make-up work.

  • If I miss a day of absence, what kinds of make-up work will be required?
    • Make-up work may include:
      • 1:1 meeting with instructor
      • Completed critical reflection journal entry turned into Canvas
      • Re-take the full course or a day of the course at a later date
  • If I complete make-up work, will I still have to make up a course day?
    • Yes, both may be required.

  • Does leaving after lunchtime count as an absence?
    • Yes, and make up work will be required.
