Cohort 21 Expectations

With meaningful action research in mind, Cohort 21 participants will:

  • be effectively embedding technology and best practices in their classroom
  • actively reflect on their practices to a wider audience while taking part in a larger, meaningful discussion about the future of teaching and learning
  • be reading, writing, reflecting and publishing their thoughts about teaching and learning
  • become more attuned to your schools mission statement and how it relates to the 21st century
  • be a part of a highly motivated cohort of learners who will continue to critically assess their teaching in terms of student success

14 of 56

By the end of the day today, you will...

  • Share, challenge and receive input/feedback on your action plan
  • Leave with a clear idea of next steps using the Design Thinking Protocols. (how, what and why).
  • Leave with a network to help you support you.
  • Leave with some specific tools that may help support your action plan.

Community Building...

The Kindness Invasion:

1) Throw out a general kindness or compliment

2) Thrown back a hope or wish for someone for today…

  • Activates mindfullness centers in the brain

Design Thinking - Empathize

Task 1 :

Start with your student’s needs. How can you improve their learning experience? This is a brainstorming phase in which you will generate many possible topics for your Action Plan. The key to this phase is that you look for a challenge or problem to overcome. (reflective)

  • Extreme Users:
    • Imagine who the extreme users are? For example, your best students and your weakest students. How are their needs the same? How do they differ?
  • Empathy Map:
    • SAY: What are some quotes and defining words your user said?
    • DO: What actions and behaviors did you notice?
    • THINK: What might your user be thinking? What does this tell you about his or her beliefs?
    • FEEL: What emotions might your subject be feeling?
  • Storytelling:
    • Your story should have 3 components: Action, Conflict, and Transformation.
    • Action: What is the character trying to do? What are the actions she is taking to achieve it?
    • Conflict: What is in her way? What questions linger beneath the surface?
    • Transformation: What is the big insight? How do the action and conflict resolve?

39 of 56

Design Thinking - Define

Task 2:

What is the problem that you are addressing?

Who else is thinking about this problem? Why do you think that this problem needs to be addressed? Here, you narrow down your ideas to one specific problem, and attempt to define that problem based on some initial research. (reflective)

  • Saturate & Group
    • Review the insights and observations posted on the padlet, and start to group them into groups of related parts.
    • The end goal is to synthesize data into interesting findings and create insights which will be useful to you in creating design solutions.
  • Point of View Madlib
    • [USER] needs to [USER’S NEED] because [SURPRISING INSIGHT]
    • Try out a number of options, playing with each variable and the combinations of them.
    • See link above for example
  • Use the Lens/Frameworks of SAMR, TIMS and/or TPACK

Lunch & Learn

1. When you came up with your business/project/tool idea what problem did you set out to try and solve?

2. Your tool/site/platform has been evolution of developments from where it started to where it is today. Can you take us through the journey, and highlight some of the high and lows. Bumps in the road and major breakthrough. What did you learn from this process? If you were given a "do-over" what would you do differently? Where would you spend more time? What would you cut?

3. What questions are you wrestling with? What forks in the road exist that could benefit from teacher insight or feedback? You have 30 independent school teachers in one room - what questions can you ask them to help your tool become better.

43 of 56

Design Thinking - Ideate & Prototype

44 of 56

Ideate - Brainstorm

Use How-Might-We (HMW) questions to start your conversation.

Use constraints to deepen the conversation (“What if my Mom had to use this tool?”)

45 of 56

Ideate - Options Diamond

This visible thinking routine fosters creative thinking and helps to explore decision making situations where a trade-off makes it hard to find a really good option.

46 of 56

Ideate - Harvey Cards

HARVEY CARDS are cards that attempt to force you to think “outside the box” in order to come up with many possible solutions to your problem. They as “What if…”

Choose a card at random and discuss with your partner, or make notes about your response to the prompts. Use these prompts to re-think your problem and solutions from a new point of view.

47 of 56

Ideate - Fast Idea Generator

The Fast Idea Generator helps to frame ideas, problems or opportunities in relation to different scenarios. It stretches the thinking around a concept in different directions, providing a stimulating discussion that will further strengthen the concept. To use the tool effectively, the starting point (problem, opportunity, concept idea or existing proposition) should be clearly laid out.

48 of 56

Ideate - Theory of Change

Setting up a Theory of Change is like making a roadmap that outlines the steps by which you plan to achieve your goal. It helps you define whether your work is contributing towards achieving the impact you envision, and if there is another way that you need to consider as well.

49 of 56

Ideate - Prototype Solutions

If you have many ideas already, or one or two solid ideas, now is the time to try and build your solution.

Don’t worry about building a physical object that will solve your problem or something that is a realistic interpretation of your action plan. You might create a diorama that shows how your classroom would look when your action plan is implemented, or you might design your own dream app that will solve all your problems.

50 of 56

Design Thinking - Reflect

Each group member will share their top idea, making a connection back to SAMR, TPACK, or TIM

  • How does your solution address the user’s needs?
  • How does your solution address the problem you defined this morning?
  • Evaluate your solution through the lens of TPACK, SAMR, or TIM

Use “I like, I wish, What if” to give your groupmates feedback on their ideas.

  • I like how your solution….
  • I wish that you had incorporated…
  • What if you tried….

  • When will I publish next? (what is my classroom schedule? When do I want feedback?)
  • How will I present my findings/exploration? (movie, powerpoint, prezi, blog, etc...)
