Business & Finance Division Recognition Awards

Outstanding Achievement in Business & Finance Librarianship

  • This award recognizes a Division member who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of business and finance librarianship and information science.

Distinguished Member Award

  • Presented to an outstanding member who has worked in the profession for more than 25 years. This award is intended to honor individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the field of business librarianship throughout the course of their career.

Achievement in Academic Business Librarianship

  • To recognize early achievers in the area of business librarianship (Only in the field 8 years or less.)

Business & Finance Division Grants and Stipends

Professional Grants

  • Funding to attend the SLA conference, preference goes to the unemployed or underfunded. Requires writing an essay detailing the significance of the grant to your professional growth in business librarianship.

Student Stipends

  • For current MLS students only to attend the SLA conference. Requires writing an essay on a choice of 3 topics.

1. What is the biggest challenge facing the profession?

2. What skills must the new information professional possess?

3. What do you hope to gain from the conference?

Where, how and when to apply

  • Due Date: March 1, 2016

  • Dos and don’ts when filling out the award nominee application
    • Nominees must be members of B&F.
    • Nomination applications don’t need to be too long, just spell out why the person deserves the award.
    • Preference to those who have not recently received an SLA award.

Lora Bray, Information Research Analyst, Credit Union National Association (CUNA), Madison, WI

  • Self-nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Business & Finance Librarianship Award
  • Composed an essay describing my experience in career transformation from “Research Librarian” to “Information Research Analyst” after our library was eliminated during the economic downturn.
  • Informed my supervisor when I’d won the award;
  • Supervisor circulated a company-wide email of congratulations, including a brief summation of the essay I’d written.
  • Result was congratulations from my colleagues, but more importantly, the announcement spread greater awareness of my role and capacity to help.
