Winter Rap by North Tama Elementary Third Graders

Verse 1

Santa and his elves are packing the sleigh. Rudolph and his friends are eating some hay. It is time for family and fun. Presents hot cocoa and being on the run

Verse 2

Winter is filled with snowflakes and snowballs. Angels, and sledding, snowmen and snow falls. Snowmobiles driving you everywhere. It’s so cold you sleep in long underwear

Verse 3

Winter’s best things are Christmas and snow days. Long vacations make us say hooray. Hoping Santa brings a lot of great toys. Presents for all the good girls and boys.

Verse 4

Sledding down a tall hill everyday. Play outside before the snow melts away. We had lots of candy in our stocking. Around the Christmas Tree, we’ve been rocking.

I peek out the window and see a soft blanket of snow.

I run outside.

Winter’s icy breath smacks my face.

Arctic marshmallows fall from the sky

into my mouth.

Snowmen, snow fun, snowball fights!

Snow angels, snow forts and snow cream with my family.

Sledding, sliding, slipping with my friends

We run inside.

Time for hot cocoa, cookies, hot cider with cinnamon

Bob the Snowflake

Christmas was coming all around the world but there was no snow. Everybody was wondering “where is the snow?” ,“ Why isn’t it snowing this year?” . People felt sad, kids were unhappy because it was winter and it wasn’t snowing. “What has happened?” “ What a mystery!”

*Written by: Rafaela Giouvri, Marianna Kallinteri, Eri Magou, Sylvia Kontou, Fotis Georgakis, Takis Galanis, Aggelos Rados, Bill Douglas, Nikos Sougaris

*Illustrated by: Fotis Georgakis

Once upon a time there was a boy whose name was

Will Wealthy.

His mum had passed away and he lived with his dad.

His dad was one of the richest men in the world

and Will one of the most spoilt boys

in the whole universe!

His dad was a scientist and

they both lived in a huge luxurious house

near Smallville….

46 of 444

Will except for being spoilt he was also really selfish and unkind. He had no friends and he always wanted to buy things for himself.

Santa Claus knew that he wasn’t nice. He was mean and naughty and for this reason he had never brought him a present.

Will was really jealous of his friends and

he wanted Santa to bring him presents

every Christmas but this had never happened.

Will got angry and told his father that he wanted

all the snow

Then his father,

because he couldn’t listen to him nagging,

bought a very expensive machine

which collected all the snow and snowflakes.

But somewhere, in a little corner...

there was one snowflake which didn’t get caught...

This snowflake’s name was Bob….

47 of 444

Bob the snowflake felt alone and sad and decided to find all of his friends! It was a very difficult mission but

he was very brave and

determined to change what was happening.

He went to Will’s house and

found the machine down in the basement.

Then pressed the button

to “self destruct” and the snow

and snowflakes were released

and returned to the world!

And Bob was the hero of all Winter!

Everyone was happy except for Will...

Snowy

Once upon a time there was a little girl who lived in a little village. Her name was Ollie. Ollie was a 9 year -old girl with dark brown hair, full lips and rosy cheeks. Ollie lived in a really big house, her parents loved her alot and she had lots of toys and everything a child could dream of, but she was feeling lonely. Ollie didn’t have many friends- actually she had no friends at all. Her parents had tried to help her at first but they had eventually accepted the fact that their child was a bit different from other kids-a wallflower but their heart’s flower!

49 of 444

Her days were always the same- following a routine- her own routine. Waking up, having breakfast and riding her bicycle to school. Then she rode straight back home to do her homework and play with her amazing toys or visit her grandma to listen to her stories- her only company and friend…Sometimes she was watching other kids playing together hide and seek and laughing and enjoying each other’s company. But she was used to her routine now and she had convinced herself that she was better off alone…

One snowy day during winter she decided to make a snowman!

She was really excited! Ollie wore her woolen gloves

her hat and her jacket and she went straight to her yard.

She started by building her snowman’s body

and she added buttons in his belly!

Then she made a round head

with black buttons for eyes

and a mouth and she added

an orange carrot for his nose.

Then she added a red hat and a

yellow scarf but something was missing…

Her snowman didn’t have arms!

So, she ran next to a tree and

she stole two wooden sticks from it!

Her snowman was ready!

What a wonderful snowman!

She was proud of herself!

Then she decided to name him Snowy

because of the snowy day…

50 of 444

People were gathering in her yard to admire Snowy! Snowy was a really cute snowman! Ollie spent a lot of time with him. She was talking to him, describing her thoughts and feelings and she was feeling that she had a real friend who she could trust and talk to. The only problem was that Ollie couldn’t play with him... she was so sad…

On Christmas Eve before she going to bed Ollie ran out in the yard,

kissed Snowy on his cheek and

she whispered “Thank you for being such a wonderful friend…

I wish you could talk and play with me, I wish you were a real kid.”

At the very same moment a star fell from the sky...

The next morning when she woke up she looked out of her window and she couldn’t believe her eyes! Snowy was ALIVE! He was moving in circles… “Can this be true?” she wondered.

She wore her coat and her gloves and she rushed to the yard.

“Hello” Ollie said… “Hello” he answered. She was in a real shock. “Am I dreaming?” she asked herself. She pinched herself to wake up but he was still there.

“Snowy are you real?”she asked again. “Neim Snowy mai is” he answered.

It was a miracle… a dream to come to true. Ollie’s wish was true. She had a real friend for herself in her own yard.

51 of 444

52 of 444

Every day she taught him new things such as English, dancing and more. She was happy to have him as a friend and proud to teach him new things.

One day when Ollie and Snowy had gone for a walk they heard someone shouting for help. They ran quickly to see what was going on. Ollie saw a little girl hanging from a cliff after she had slipped because of the ice and she was ready to fall! Ollie tried to catch her hand and drag her back up but she wasn't strong enough.. Snowy ran and saved them both..

When the girl met Ollie and her strange friend she was astonished…she could not believe her eyes.. What a strange friendship! She immediately wanted to be friends with Ollie and she started asking all kinds of questions about Snowy!

53 of 444

The three of them played and they had a great day! Ollie and her new friend Anna were now best friends and they spent all their days playing with Snowy, teaching him things and laughing with his strange English…

But Spring was about to come and the sun started to be hot so the day that Ollie and Anna had to say goodbye to Snowy had arrived…They both cried and cried and were so disappointed and unhappy but Snowy wasn't and before he melted he told them: "You now have each other to remember me and ,after all, if you love me now it is the time to say goodbye because things might sometimes not last forever but true friendships can! And although I have to go you have your friendship that can last forever!"

Winter

By Daniel Lovewell

On a cold day

I put on my snow boots

I am a scary yeti

I leave a trail of giant footprints

I walk to school

I am dragon

I have dragon breath

I leave a trail of steamy clouds

In the evening

I curl up snuggly beside the fire

I am a cat

Pretending there is no snow

Winter, winter all around,

Now snow is to be found.

In the night we hear no sound.

Winter, winter all around,

I see snowflakes on the ground,

In Wisconsin there is no sound

Except if a snowstorm hits the ground.

Winter, winter all around.

Winter & Franklin’s School Garden

By Mrs. Lowe’s Students

We pulled the weeds out of the ground so they wouldn’t take the nutrients from the soil.

The soil will rest all winter. The worms will dig down deep and hibernate for the winter.

When the soil warms up in the spring, the worms will wake up and make the soil rich for planting.

There were 75 seeds that came from this one marigold flower.

They will sleep until the soil, water, and sun wake them up after winter.

The weeds need to be pulled before the ground freezes. The dirt is very cold. The lettuce grows even when it is cold.

Marigolds

Marigolds are golden in the summer and autumn.

Now at the beginning of winter they are dead.

Their time was finished in the autumn.

The leaves are green and red

In the autumn.

They fall off

In the winter.

What would it be like if snow was made of marshmallows:

I would eat some of the marshmallows and bring some hot chocolate to add to it.

I would eat the marshmallow and the have a tummy ache and do it AGAIN

I would get a cup of hot chocolate and go outside and grab a whole bunch of marshmallows and put it in my hot chocolate.

Eat it ALL. And then hope for more.

I wouldn’t see “snow” for a mile.

I would have the time of my life. Iwould invite all of my friends to make a snowman and snowball fight and not run out of MARSHYMALLOWS!!!!!!!!!*_*

I would have a marshmallow party.

I would eat it with many people and devour it

I’ll put some hot chocolate on myself, fall into the marshmallow snow and enjoy it

I would pour hot chocolate on top of it and then take a bit of the marshmellow.

I will eat all of it and not share it with anyone.

I would eat all the marshmallows I could see and make a giant marshmallow.

I LIKE MARSHMALLOWS SO I WOULD EAT SOME AND ALSO MAKE A MARSHMALLOW CAKE.

I would eat a lot and would bring a big cup to put some to take home.

I would make a marshmallow castle and invite all my friends (100,000 peeps) we would then have a contest for who can eat the most it would be a snow called a marsh day

i would have a party and the cake is the marshmallows.

If snow was made of marshmallows I would always be outside in the snow and I would bring a cup of hot chocolate to drink with the marshmallows.

If snow was made of marshmallows, I would be outside enjoying the sky drinking hot cocoa while making a marshman!(a.k.a Snowman!)

I would make s'mores and make marsh angles

I would eat until i’m full and make marshmallows angels

I would get graham crackers and chocolate and eat smores all day.

I will start a campfire and cook up the marshmallows

I WOULD BUILD THE GREATEST MARSHMALLOW MAN IN HISTORY!!!!

Oh the things I could make with marshmallow snow - marshmallow cupcakes, marshmallow cookies, marshmallow lasagna and marshmallow pizza!!!!

I would make like three million chocolate covered marshmallow angles --- mmmmm. and man would my hands, face and fingers be sticky! Who cares!????

One Morning

You wake up one morning , and what do you see?

Snow on the ground and snow on the trees.

You wake up one morning and what do you hear?

Cardinals chirping and blizzards so clear

You wake up one morning, and what do you smell?

Holly on trees and reindeer with bells.

You wake up one morning and what do you taste?

Hot chocolate and peppermint-yay!

You wake up one morning, and what do you know?

You’ll have a nice day with fun in the snow. M.K.

A Snow Covered Winter

The snow is falling all around,

Landing on trees and the ground.

It's coming from the sky above,

So put on your scarves, boots, and gloves.

Some people smile, and people frown,

But that doesn't stop it from falling down.

In Wisconsin it will be everywhere,

Freezing you, your nose, and hair.

One of the best thing that comes with snow,

Inspire people to make their house glow.

You wake up to presents under the tree,

And see your entire family filled with glee.

Leaving only autumn and winter to rule

Over their forgotten fortress

Called home.

Isaac S’s slide

There are snowflakes here and there

floating in the chilly air

and when they hit the ground I think

shoveling snow will really stink

I always have and always will

Like the snow even in a freezing chill

But when the time comes I have to shovel snow

To it I will try to say no

But this year is different because of something someone wanted to sell

It is a snow blower that works really well

Now I can be in peace

In the snow which is winter’s masterpiece.

Snow is falling in tiny flakes

Frozen with ice are the lakes

The tree is set up with bright cheer

Winter season is finally here

The hills are dotted with people on skis

For as far as any eye sees

Stockings hang happily on the fireplace

Where they await Saint Nick’s case

It is a beautiful time of year

With family and friends near

I wish that your holiday is filled with the sight

Of beautiful snow and frosty nights

Trevor

That first morning that I can wake up look outside and see a layer of beautiful frosty snow covering the ground, I feel amazing. The sight of snow means many things to me. Christmas is coming with presents, awesome dinner, and family. Rare chances to skip school if the roads are too icy is one of the best parts. Even ice skating once or twice if I’m lucky.

Winter is my favorite season for another reason too. My birthday is in December. So i get double the presents at Christmas. Some for Christmas and some for my birthday!

Winter also has Thanksgiving, which means a massive feast with the family members I only see on occasion!

I sometimes want every season to be the Winter season. My favorite season of all!

Have a Happy Holiday

What do you see in winter

by Mai Yer Vang

Winter is so amazing like a blanket of white,

Sister says it is a ice that bites,

Kids are making something out of ice that scares me so,

Mother says the its is a snowman that is nice,

I can't wait for christmas,

But daddy’s on business,

I am scared to see the whole family,

Brother says that if I do I would be manly,

I feel so scared at these cold nights,

Big sister says to throw a stone at the sight of light,

Auntie says to go to outside to see what I behold,

But all I seem to know is that I am cold,

When everyone comes to visit,

Were altogether giving each other kisses,

Snow, Snow Everywhere. Wisconsin and Father Winter are quite the pair.

People often stare. To see the magic in the air. People here you see can be as happy as can be. But when it comes time to leave. Father Winter gives us relief.

Winter is the time to grieve about the Autumn leaves. Now we have to wear long sleeves and and stay and have cozy warm tea. The Winter calls us near to the end of the

year.

Winter in Brrrrrecksville

A Collaborative Poem by

Chippewa Elementary K-3 Students

265 of 444

Take a look outside our windows.

What is there to see?

It’s wintertime; the snow is falling.

What does that mean for you and me?

We see frozen lakes and evergreens,

Snowhills, owls and deer.

Snowball fights, skating and fun

Will bring us all to cheer.

Pictures by Kindergarten students

266 of 444

Of course there’s the bad side of winter, too.

With frostbite, blizzards and storms.

But moms will fix hot cocoa

That will help to keep us warm.

Pictures by First Grade students

267 of 444

Pictures by Second Grade students

Outside we see the snow on trees.

It’s cold and time to pick.

Skiing, tobogganing, building a fort;

Which one will do the trick?

As icicles grow from the rooftops,

And frost appears on cars,

We dress up like snowbunnies

With hats and gloves and scarves.

268 of 444

Winter in Brrrrrrecksville is lots of fun.

We love to get out and play!

Now just one more thing we have to do…

Hope for a “No School” day!

Winter is Here

By Evelyn Gratton

Winter is here, O winter is here! What fun will it be to slip around on the ground!

The first snow has come, for it tis on the earth, evidence everywhere of the fun all around! Beautiful O beautiful the white tis in the trees, on the ground, everywhere this it bound to end up, pretty and sound, soft in mounds.

Winter is here O winter is here! What fun will it be to build snowmen, make a den!

I love to make snow angels flowy and soft, and pretend they are calling me to go aloft.

To slide and to slip, O fun it tis!

Sliding slightly as I go down to the woods

to have fun in the different perspectives!

Winter is here O winter is here!

What fun will it be to be happy and cheered!

Happy O yes! To be happy and blessed!

To have good spirit and to have guessed,

the winter season is the greatest of them all!

The color of winter in Branson

By: Breana Smith

The color of Winter in Branson is White.

white like the color of clouds dancing through the sky

white like the color of snow covering cold sleeping grass

The color of Winter in Branson is Red.

red for the lights that cover the entire town, flashing on and off

red for the color of children's cheeks, frozen stiff

The color of Winter in Branson is Blue.

Blue, like the frozen lakes that haven’t lost color quite yet

Blue, like the birds flying south, in hope to find warmth

The color of Winter in Branson is Green.

Green because of the decorated trees you can find almost anywhere

Green because of the trees getting covered in snow, flake by flake.

The color of WInter in Branson is Rainbow.

rainbow for all of the great colors, that make up winter in Branson.

It is wonderful to live in Ohio in the winter. One thing you can do is build different kinds of snow figures. For example, you can make a snow dog, a snow cat, a snowman or a snow woman. Also, you can have a snowball fight with your friends, family and neighbors. It is a fun way to play in the snow. When you come in from playing in the snow, you can have delicious hot chocolate to warm up. You can add marshmallows and whipped cream to the top. Yum! That’s why Ohio is the best place to live in the winter.

A happy snow monster

Written by: Eva,Athan,Panos,George,Catherine,Jim,Akis,Marina,Paris,Eve,Elias, Argiris,Adamantios,Themis,Fenia and Bessy Class D1 of 35 Primary School of Trikala Greece

Once upon a time, there was a big farm in a large forest. It was freezing cold and it was snowing heavily. There lived a thin pig, a fat worm, a black goose a red frog, a quick snail, a blue hippo, a purple kangaroo and a slow hare. A strange elf was looking after all these animals. He was a good and caring elf but he was changing colours when he was scared or angry.

312 of 444

One foggy Christmas Eve Santa Claus was getting ready to travel around the world and deliver gifts to every child and everywhere and the first to get some goodies were his beloved animals and elves. But all of a sudden something terrible happened. An evil snow monster broke into Santa Claus’ workshop and stole all the presents. Everyone was devastated!!!When all hope seemed to be lost, a brave deer named Dave and his friend Sue the cow and Tony the ox stepped in and offered to telephone the brave worm in order to save Christmas.

313 of 444

All the animals decided to travel in the freezing cold for hours until they found the snow monster’s cave, Tony the ox who was the strongest threw a gigantic snowball. Dave the deer helped him to make more snowballs. ‘STOP!’ Sue the cow yelled. There was a strange noise coming out of the cave . it was the snow monster, he was crying. His name was Christopher and everyone was scared of him. He was tall and husky and no one wanted to be his friend. That is why he stole the gifts, so he could have something to play with. Dave the deer , Sue the cow and Tony the ox took Christopher and the presents back to Santa’s workshop. At first, everyone was afraid of Christopher the snow monster but then Dave the deer told everyone his story and they welcomed him with joy . In the end there was one last question to be answered.

‘Why didn’t Christopher ever get a Christmas present?

314 of 444

Ho! Ho! Ho! You know Christopher every Christmas night I leave gifts for you outside your cave but the snow covers them as it falls and they get lost in it. Maybe, you should think of getting your mailbox fixed!!! Santa said and all of them laughed and they lived happily ever after!!!!

THE END

A big winter journey

It was a hot winter morning in the South Pole and a cute reindeer with a red nose was born. It was different from his brothers and sisters because of its red nose. He felt lonely and he left his house and his village. He travelled over hill and dale, across fields and moors and he felt very cold and tired because it was snowing heavily but suddenly he heard someone crying. He saw a thin snowman without a carrot nose and without eyes. The reindeer approached this strange snowman and asked him:’Why are you crying, my friend?’ ‘I feel abandoned and I want someone to be with me because I am stuck in the snow. Then the reindeer offered to take the sad snowman with him and they became friends. They started walking and they found a big hotel to spend the night. Oh! What a surprise!

316 of 444

In the hotel there were a lot of other animals staying as well. There were a pink and blue zebra ,a red panda,a green donkey,a crazy monkey,a blue wolf, a smart pig, a little whale and a short strange purple snake. That night the animals made a great decision and that was to make a big journey a reach North Pole and meet Santa Claus.

317 of 444

All together they travelled all over the world, they saw places that they have never seen before , they met new people. MEXICO,U.S.A.,COLUMBIA, NEW ZEALAND,BRAZIL, HAWAII ,GREECE, ANTARCTICA and many others.

318 of 444

Finally they reached the North Pole and they were very happy to be there!!!

As soon as they met Santa Claus they all wanted to become his assistants because he was very busy and they were willing to help. Santa Claus offered them a hot cup of chocolate and they all started the good work. The animals and the snowman decided to stay in the North Pole for ever and start a new life there because they like offering help and joy and love to people!

That is the most important thing in our life, isn’t it?

Winter in Central New York

Westmoreland Road Elementary School

Whitesboro, New York 13492

All 425 students at Westmoreland Road Elementary School (kindergarten through fifth grade) participated in creating this 15 foot long collage. Each student was given a 5 inch by 5 inch piece of white paper, a pair of scissors, and one piece of tape. Elizabeth Carroll, the librarian, guided the students to create a mural inspired by the book and song Winter...The Coldest Season of All. The project was open-ended. The students worked collaboratively to create a school community winter mural. The mural was completed in five days.

Winter Itself

By 4th Graders: Charlie, Isabelle, Reese, Bodhi, Gemma, Will, Quinn, Edwin and Savannah

My first breath feels like super small bees stinging my lungs.

Snow crunches under my feet and a snowflake lands on my nose.

Footsteps in snow seem to shatter the delicate sprinkled frost.

A brown hand sticking out of the ground holding cold flour.

Light bounding off snow like a laser and a mirror having a fight.

The sun, a light bulb in the sky, someone took a lamp and hung it in the air.

Snow sprinkled all over, a winter wonderland.

Snowballs are cookie dough before going into the oven.

Goosebumps occur as if winter frost was coming to get you with a cheerful chill of winter itself.

A Frosticle Day

By 2nd Graders: Aurelia, Micah, Carter, Leila and Gavin

Crunchy snow shatters as I run,

A shiny white blanket as shiny as silver,

Frosty flakes like sugar cubes,

I smell the fresh air like popsicles’

I listen to little birds chirp like a flute playing a sweet, sweet song.

Surrey is situated 40 km east of Vancouver. It is the 2nd largest city in British Columbia, behind Vancouver, with a population over 500,000 people. We average 7 snowy days as compared to 170 rainy days. Our average snowfall per year is 38 cm or 15 inches.

In Canada we don’t get a lot of snow. once in a while we get a bit of snow. It isn’t very deep. However we do get frost. When it does snow we build a snowman.

I am from endless food

I am from the cold nights at the River Of Lights

I am from a warm Christmas in Zuni, New Mexico

New Mexico Winter

New Mexico winter is basically like the rest of the year except colder, and more leaves on the ground. Summer is 80-90º and winter is 30-45º in the morning and 60-70º in the afternoon. Unlike everywhere else, it almost never snows. If it does, it comes in small quantities. ½ an inch of snow is enough for a delay, or even no school at all. To the South and West of Albuquerque it is warm all the time, but the North and East are foresty and cold. The Sandias are always snowy in the top third.

New Mexico Weather

I remember the time it snowed more than any other day of the year. I went outside and played in the snow while it kept snowing. Snowflakes and snow fell down from the sky that even our dogs had to dig their way through the snow to go outside. The weird part was it was snowing in the middle of February which is pretty surprising to other people who don’t live in NM. It is most common to snow in January or February. The weather in New Mexico is pretty strange because in December during the winter; most of the month is sunny and hot. But I remember that every year we have one day it snows or rains a lot all of a sudden.

New Mexico Winter Poem

By Cole Romig

Winter in New Mexico.

Its time for the holidays and the hot coco.

Never forget the chili.

The sun always shines.

Everyone loves the snow.

Right above you lays the clouds.

Snow in Albuquerque

Last year Albuquerque got the most snow I’ve ever seen before, I’m guessing 6 inches. I made a snowman named Jeffery, but later that night I hit the snowman with a baseball bat and that was the end of Jeffery. Jeffery looked like a snowman, but he blended in well with the snow-capped mountains.

Our mountains are called the Sandias. The Sandias are cool and the huge mountains were covered in snow and there were people cross-country skiing and sledding and the in the mountains people were snowshoeing.

WINTER IN NEW MEXICO

FREEZING COLD YOU HAVE TO WEAR LAYERS OF CLOTHES.

TREE LEAVES ARE FALLING EVERY TIME YOU LOOK AROUND.

GET SOME HEAT OR IT’S HARD TO EAT.

GO TO STARBUCKS GET SOME HOT COCOA AND GET ALL SNUGGLED UP.

LOOK OUTSIDE AT THE MOUNTAINS WITH THE BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE WHITE SNOW.

Winter in Cochiti

Every year in my culture we do the Buffalo and Deer Dance. I dance in the Buffalo Dance. I dance as a deer. On the Buffalo Dance there is also ram and antelope dancers. It is fun dancing, but it gets really cold.

New Mexico Winter

When I wake up it is freezing cold. When I step outside it feels like 30 degrees out even if I am wearing double clothing. It is still freezing, but I love the view of the warm hot air balloons. I wonder if they’re cold? Meanwhile my mom is making green chili stew for tonight’s supper because it takes forever!

The next day when I walk out my door there is snow all over the ground. I go run in my brother’s room and tell them, “it’s snowing!” Then they jump up and get ready to play snow fight.

During the war of snow fight I get hit in the face, but it was worth it. We make a 5-foot snowman, but as always it took a very long time. After we were done we went to the Sandia Mountains to go sledding. It was freezing when we went up there and it looked so foggy because we were literally in the clouds. When we were finally done we got to eat good delicious Indian tacos.

It was a good day for New Mexico.

The unique snowflakes glisten all around

Each and everyone profound

The snowcaps shine on the mountains

New Mexico holds so many heights to hold

They are all different and beautiful

Never one the same

All the details make them special

And perfect in their own way

Be grateful for every snowflake

Because they all melt away

The snow in New Mexico is on and off

It comes to visit on the Manzano Mountains

Next day it’s gone

So again, be grateful for the snow

It will come and go

Winter in New Mexico

There is snow and the weather gets colder. You need something hot to keep you warm like coffee, a furnace or a heater. You need like three layers of jackets because it feels so cold to us.

By: Sam De Castro

Winter

Every winter my family and I get together. We usually make tamales and go to the Twinkle Light Parade in Nob Hill. Every time we go it gets really cold and we have to take layers of jackets!!!!

On Christmas night we open our presents so that our family from out of town can make it to our house. It’s important because our family from other states come and visit almost every Christmas!!!!!!

Winter

Every year during winter time, my family and I make tamales and posole. We also always go to Old Town for the Lighting of the Christmas Tree and the Twinkle Light parade. During that time of the year it makes me feel happy that families get together and go to Old Town for their Christmas traditions.

Waiting for Snow

In New Mexico most of Christmas is spent waiting for snow to fall. Snow is a rare occasion and when it happens it makes for a very special Christmas. The snow makes the family spend time together by the fire and tell stories that have been passed down by generations of family. These stories send Christmas spirit throughout the house and makes the most special Christmas of all.

My Christmas Memory

By: Isabella Sandoval

When it’s around Christmas…

My family and I go to see the luminarias, brown bags with sand and a candle inside them.

My cousins come over to my house and we bake biscochitos.

My whole family goes to my grandma and grandpa’s house and they almost always make a feast.

We all go to my auntie Nini’s house and we all sit around the tree and open presents youngest to oldest by their age.

Winter in New Mexico

Everyday I dream

but it seems

like it will never come.

I go outside as I hear leaves rustle

my brothers watch as I hustle.

New Mexico gets not a lot of snow

when it comes we watch it go.

The mountains get a lot of snow

but here down below

we don’t get a lot of snow.

When we drive and see the glow

of the luminarias

we all are stop and say “whoa.”

NM Winter Poem

By: Ben Gannon

Not usually cold here in New Mexico

Many people wander through Old Town to find gifts

White flakes flowing over homes and pueblos

It is so quiet here during the days of December

Nobody is out on the freezing streets of New Mexico

‘Tis the season to be jolly

Everyone is inside preparing for the holidays

Ready for my family to celebrate Christmas

It Won’t Snow (Parody of “Let It Snow”)

The weather outside is frightful

There’s no snow, no reason to smile

And since we live in New Mexico

There’s no snow, there’s no snow, there’s no snow

When it’s finally Winter Break

We’re all out to celebrate

And since we’re finally off from school

It will snow, it will snow, it will snow

New Mexican Winters

Snow falls on the dry desert floor, while families are inside gathered around the fire, sipping on hot green chili stew. On the outside there are various houses with several paper bags filled with sand and with the candle lighting up on the outer edge of them. These lights are called luminarias.

There may be families indoors, but there are also families out and about walking the streets and watching all the decorated floats for the parade going by. On the sidewalks of the streets are stores with the words “Feliz Navidad” written on their windows, Feliz Navidad meaning Merry Christmas. Showing culture and gathering together to fulfill our many traditions, this is winter in New Mexico.

New Mexico Christmas

By: Ember Thomas

No snow on the ground

Embers from the fire flying about

What presents do we expect?

More clothes than toys

Expect more toys than clothes

Xylophones play in the distance

I listen to the music as it plays

Could we get snow?

Oh how I wish we got snow

Can I go outside

Hope to see snow on the ground

Roar of thunder hear my cry

Is there snow in the sky

Snow reaches the ground but doesn’t stick

Tomorrow morning wake with the hope of snow on the ground,

Morning on Christmas morning

As I go down stairs I see

Snow!

Winters in New Mexico

The winters in New Mexico are the kind of cold that you can’t get away from. No matter how many layers you put on it’s still a little cold. It’s only cold like that sometimes in the winters in NM. In New Mexico the snow come very fast and unexpected, it either melts in like 5 minuets or it stay for a long time, which is rare and wonderful because we get to stay home. In NM it snows only about 2 times in the winter.

Winter Memory

I remember when I first lived in New Mexico it snowed a lot near my house, and since it never snows in Albuquerque. My friends and I made a bunch of snowmen and had a snowball fight.

Winter in New Mexico

My memory that I have about winter is that one day it was snowing and school was cancelled. I got to stay home. I don’t really like the cold. The cold feels like ice on your skin. The trees filled with ice and sparkled like crystals. I love winter because it tells me that Christmas is almost here. By Clashae Means

WINTER

Wonderful times for the family

Inside is warmer than the outside

New Mexico loves the snow

The snow falls onto the desert we live in

Everybody wants it to stay in New Mexico

Remember to build a snowman.

Winter In New Mexico

Winter in New Mexico is different from other places. It is different because we have different traditions, and also it probably does not snow as much as other places. When it does happen to snow, people go sledding, people have snowball fight, and some people build snowmen.

One of the main traditions we have is that around Christmas a lot of people put luminarias instead of Christmas lights. The winter in New Mexico may not snow a lot, but I can get really cold. In New Mexico it can snow up to a foot but since it can get really hot quickly the snow can melt quickly too.

Winter Time in New Mexico

Josh Pino

The month of Christmas in December is filled with joy and Christmas spirit. There are gifts under the Christmas tree. The pueblo villages in New Mexico are decorated with lights. Families eat posole and tamales during a feast. In New Mexico during the wintertime is cold and there’s not that much snow falling. There are religious Native American dances during Christmas parades in nm.

Winter Morning

Waking up to winter morning

With some hot chocolate

December morning is the time for

Sleigh rides

In the Sandia Mountains

Backing Biscochitos

Catching snowflakes falling snow

And cozy fluffy Falsa blanket

Is what winter is like in New Mexico.

Snowy moments

When it snows it is usually not that close to Christmas. A couple years ago it actually snowed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. New Mexico was and still is a hot and dry place so it usually is cold in the winter, but it hardly ever snows here in New Mexico. That made me happy that it snowed because I like snow. Winter in New Mexico is my favorite season because it is my favorite weather to be in. When it does snow it looks so cool and white.

Winter in New Mexico

What is like in New Mexico? First it is really cold and people think it snows. No, it does not snow here and if it does it is not that much. The cold is like you are in the middle of nowhere and you are going to die and you just feel it hit your body and you start to shake like tree branches. The morning is like you want to stay in your warm blankets that are warm and all you want to do is lay in your bed the whole time. Many people do things like making something called tamales and you need Masa, cornhusk, and what you would like to put in them like red-hot chili and meat and it is really good.

Winter in New Mexico

Wintertime in New Mexico consists of snow laid out upon the floor throughout the entire city of Albuquerque creating a serene view.

Having a good time snow boarding and playing in the snow all day.

Looking at the snow capped Sandia Mountains while watching the snow slowly melt.

After the nice peaceful day in the snow we go inside, look at the lit Christmas tree and drink hot chocolate.

This is winter in New Mexico.

WINTER in New Mexico

White glaring snow

In the hot blazing desert

No more heat for weeks to come

Time to eat tamales with friends and family

Everyone sleeps in heat

Winter in New Mexico

My favorite time of the year is winter because it’s cold and you can play in the snow. Another tradition that my family and I do in the winter is sit by the fireplace and drink eggnog with our pets. My favorite holiday of winter is Christmas because it is Jesus’ birthday and the best part of all is that we get presents. The important part of Christmas is that we all get to spend time with family members.

New Mexico Winters

Waking up to a small sheet of snow and seeing a roadrunner rush by.

Baking biscochitos and drinking hot cocoa by the fire.

Windy air rustling the dead leaves.

Snowball fights with friends, building snowmen with family.

Hardly ever snows, but when it does we go.

Winter And Snow

The weather in winter is really cold,

sometimes the weather is really bold.

People drink coffee to stay warm,

so they won’t be cold in a winter storm.

Winter can be really fun,

AAHH, snowball RUN.

Winter is the time to cuddle,

but when it melts there are muddy puddles.

When it’s cold I put on my hat shaped bow.

Christmas

I love Christmas because the green and red lights hanging from the adobe homes of the New Mexico people. The lights make Christmas beautiful because the color and the life that the lights bring to the day. On Christmas, it is so cold it feels like it could snow. It never really snows in the desert and it makes me want to cry.

SNOW

Snow is all I used to see

Back in Virginia where I used to be

Now I’m in New Mexico

Where it usually doesn’t snow

Now when someone asks where to be

I say New Mexico is the place to go

What I’m saying is that

New Mexico is New Mexico

It is cold,

It has hot cocoa with marshmallows

and

It has sleds even though it doesn’t snow

And that is what I love.

Snow means to me when kids play in the snow. Also they get time off of school to play outside in the cold. Another way to say snow means to enjoy the beautiful outside winter and to enjoy the little things.

Winter Memory

On one New Mexico winter day my mother and I built a snowman. I remember looking out my window and seeing white covering the tops of the Sandia mountains. This was a special winter because everything was covered in snow, which is surprising for New Mexico. I ran to my mother and asked her, “Can we please build a snowman?”

She said, “YES”. I was so happy I rushed to get ready. We went out to my front yard and started building. Once we finished building the snowman, my mother threw a snowball at me. It turned into a snowball fight. We finished up and went inside and had some of abuelita’s hot chocolate. Later that night we watch cheesy Christmas movies.

ONE MORNING

By Kendra Thompson

When I woke the ground was covered in snow and hardly anyone could drive in it. This was surprising to me because it never snows this much in New Mexico. This day was so amazing because this much snow only happens once a year.

The weather outside is frigid

The morning is freezing

Your body turns to ice

It makes you want to eat spice

The middle of the day the temperature rises

You can wear your regular clothes

The moment that sun sets you get a rush of wind

Everything seems to blend in

The night comes, and the sun goes down

Sweaters go back on

TV’s get cut on T-Shirts are worn

And all the bread must be torn

My Winter in New Mexico

A few years ago my cousins from El Districto Federal came to visit us during the Holidays. At the time my aunt was moving and my family had already found our own house so some people stayed in the apartment with my Tia. It soon had gotten late and we all slept by the side of the fireplace in my house looking at the beautiful Christmas tree, and as the sun arose the next morning we caught the first glimpse of the snow. My youngest cousin at that time Renata woke all of us to see the snow and we rushed out to play. Later we came inside and were welcomed with some warm biscochitos and hot chocolate. The day of Christmas I was awaken by the sound of the train going around and I saw the many presents around the tree and I woke everybody and one by one we gave and received our presents I had the greatest time.

My New Mexico Memories

My greatest memories in New Mexico are when my family was still here. Now they are in Mexico so we can’t really do anything because they are fun. Most of my cousins live somewhere else. The best memory that I have is when I was in Denver and in Denver there was a lot of snow so we had a snowball fight and it was so much fun. These are the memories I can remember about winter.

My New Mexico Memory

My greatest memory in New Mexico is the first time I build a snowman. It was awesome. I got help from my best friend. I stayed there for a while and then the sun came out and it melted. I took a lot of pictures. It was the best day of my life and I also built a wall out of snow and had a snowball fight.

My Christmas memory

By :Spencer Stanaland

One of my memories of Christmas was when my dad, brother, mom and me went into the forest to get a tree. I don’t remember when or where this happened, but I think that it happened about 2 years ago. That was a really fun Christmas, it was the first time I actually had a real tree that was not plastic.

For the food we had tamales. This wasn’t at my house where the tree was it was at my Uncle’s house he lives in the city across the Rio Grande. We also had lamb that my grandma cooked. We are Native American and we usually butcher a lamb but, we did not butcher it, we just got it from the store. We also made menudo and hominy and had a dish that my grandma made called inish bishy, it is hominy mixed with red chili and dough rolled up. It is really good, that is all I have to say about my Christmas memory.

OH New Mexico

OH New Mexico how I love you so,

When your trees look sad and

your wind hits me like little needles.

OH the smell of frost in the air fills

my lungs and reminds me of the first

day of winter.

OH New Mexico how I love you so.

New Mexico Winter

Jonathan Ortega

It was snowing. There was a small layer of snow on top of the dirt. I could see the blue Sandia Mountains. My family and I were having a snowball fight. I was making a snowball and as I got up to throw it then I saw a snowball going super fast at my face. It hit me and I fell. I had a black eye for a month! Well at least as soon as I got home I had some warm and ready posole to eat.

First Time Seeing Snow

So I was at my house on Christmas Eve. We ate and were about to open presents. So I tore into a piece of wrapping paper and then my mom said, “It is snowing!” So I put on my jacket and ran outside and saw the snow. I made a snowball and threw it at my brother. It was an awesome day.

WINTER IN NEW MEXICO

IT’S REALLY BREEZY WITH LEAVES BLOWING AROUND YOU. THE BLOWING SOUND OF THE WIND FREEZING COLD EVERYWHERE.THE MOUNTAINS COVERED WITH WHITE FROM THE BEAUTIFUL SNOW THAT MAKES IT REALLY BEAUTIFUL. IN ALBUQUERQUE WE HARDLY GET ANY SNOW. BY THE TIME WE FIGURE OUT WE HAVE SNOW IT IS USUALLY IN THE MORNING LIKE ONCE YOU LOOK OUT YOU WINDOW YOU USUALLY SEE SNOW EVERYWHERE. USUALLY IN WINTER PEOPLE STAY INSIDE DRINKING HOT CHOCOLATE BY A FIRE AND ENJOYING THE WINTER SEASON.

Albuquerque snow

Seriously where is it?

Really it’s nowhere.

Adonai’s winter poem!

Glaring snow hits the floor. Winter storms are hardcore. A good day for holidays. No more hot sun rays. Winter break and snowflakes. These are the best better than teaching and the rest. Even if you don’t celebrate holidays it’s always too good to have a break. But for my sake… Don’t text me I’m not gonna be awake! Now, New Mexico is harsh, where every morning you have to clean your car. Seeing crazy sales, downside though you frostbite your thumbnails. Make sure to have a coat, otherwise you will get sick and have burns in your throat. Sometimes you need to make a fire. Don’t be cold and tired. There may be a lot of snow that will freeze bro, but when it comes to that yo, make sure to wear a coat. If you have a skateboard and you are bored.. take off the trucks or buy a deck with a few extra bucks…. And go to the skatepark, where you can slide down with your deck, but make sure to wear a helmet or you will get wrecked!

First time snowboarding

About a month before winter break during 5th grade my dad told me we were going to snowboard the second week of winter break. My sister wanted to ski and I wanted to snowboard. We went to rent gear because it was my first time and my dad didn't want to buy me anything. I went to get a lesson because I had no idea how to snowboard. I learned pretty fast. After I got lunch I was ready to go on the ski lift for my first time. I didn’t really know how to turn so I went straight down. It was really fun and I still really like snow boarding.

Winter In New Mexico

You could take a walk and look at all the luminarias twinkling on top of the adobe buildings or you could just sit down at the table next to a fire burning on pinion logs. You could eat some tamales or eat some posole with heaps of red or green chile. You can always see the watermelon mountains with snow on the peaks.

Christmas In New Mexico...

Christmas in New Mexico is...skin breaking cold

Christmas in New Mexico is...like wizard of oz windy it could take a whole house

Christmas in New Mexico is... as bright as people light up luminarias

Christmas in New Mexico is...beautiful as the snow falls on the trees

Christmas in New Mexico is...as magical as never, never land
