Measuring school climate is critical for improving school climate because high quality school climate data allow you to understand the perceptions of the students, staff, and parents in your school or district; monitor progress; make data-driven decisions; involve stakeholders; and adapt to shifting needs related to school climate.

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) is dedicated to helping keep students safe and improving their learning environments. In particular, ED developed the high-quality, adaptable ED School Climate Surveys (EDSCLS) and associated web-based platform. The EDSCLS allows States, local districts, and schools to collect and act on reliable, nationally-validated school climate data in real-time.

Summary reports provide a question-by-question breakdown of response rates without disclosing individual responses or information that could be used to infer the identity of individuals. Responses to open-ended questions are included at the end of each report.

Survey Deployment

Survey Distribution Considerations

EDSCLS provides several ways to deploy their surveys:

  • Surveys can be deployed via installation of a virtual machine designed and maintained by EDSCLS.
  • Surveys can be deployed via several well-known survey platforms such as SurveyMonkey.
  • For our purposes, we used a third-party to deploy the survey with SurveyMonkey. They calculated results and provided the data back to the district.

We originally deployed this survey in 2023 just to staff. This year, we have expanded the survey to include staff, students, and parents. With this expansion we will be able to compare data sets from year to year as part of our School Improvement Work.

  • Drugs are a problem at my child’s school: 78% felt small or no problem
  • I feel comfortable talking to someone at my schools to talk about my child’s behavior ​​90%
  • The school notifies the parents effectively with emergencies: 82% agree/strongly agree
  • The school takes effective measures to ensure the safety of students: 86% agree/strongly agree
  • Only 56% feel we provide high-quality services for social and emotional supports
  • Only 54% feel they hear about good things their child does
  • Only 55% feel school rules are applied equally to all students and/or discipline is fair

** The parent/guardian survey is not designed to produce scores. Due to the brevity of the survey, parent/guardian data should be examined at only the item level. **

Executive Summary (Students and Staff)

  • Students in Grades 5-6 had a high level of confidence in the physical safety in the building.
  • Students in middle and high school had a concern with bullying - especially cyberbullying.
  • Students in high school had a high level of concern with substance abuse regarding their perception of student use and accessibility.
  • Staff responses did not reflect that same level of concern.
  • All Staff had an opportunity to make comments at the end of the survey. We received very few remarks (approximately 30 comments - note we have over 300 staff members)

Next Steps

  • Each School Building will have an opportunity to review their data (staff, parent, and student data) as part of the MCIP School Improvement Process. The MICIP Team will share the summary results with staff.
  • Correlate our MIPHY Data with the School Climate Data to begin planning next steps to support students in the area of substance abuse, bullying, and appropriate use of Social Media.
  • Reflect with staff the student perceptions of their classroom relationships with students. (Connection to our PBIS and MTSS Work)
  • At the district level, we will be sharing information with our parents via Over the Fence.
