Good day, everyone! Welcome to Lesson 10 as we continue to get you ready for your team film projects. Did you know that a lot of work in filmmaking is done before you ever pick up the camera? Yes, you have to prepare as you do for anything. Think about the tests you take. You spend the majority of the year learning and practicing before you ever actually take the test. It’s the same concept. Prep is key!

Film Guidelines Jigsaw

Reading and Group Discussion (7 minutes):

Access your film guidelines
Wait for your section assignment
Read assigned section(s) carefully. OPTION: choose a reader to read assigned section(s) aloud or team members can read silently
As a team, discuss the main points of your section and write a brief summary (3-4 sentences) on paper
Teams prepare to share your summary with the class by selecting the presenter for their team

Share Out (8 minutes):

Each team has 1 minute to present your section summary to the class (1 minute per section)
Encourage students to note key points from each section as they listen to other groups

T: Here is the activity you will do. You have 15 minutes to complete the task including share out with the whole class. [Read through the directions on the slide then students should start]

Activity - Jigsaw:

Reading and Team Discussion:

- Distribute the guidelines document/link.

- Assign each team one to two sections.

- Instruct the teams to read their assigned sections carefully. Teams can choose a reader to read their assigned section(s) aloud or team members can read silently.

- Each team discusses the main points of their section and writes a brief summary (3-4 sentences) on paper.

- Teams prepare to share their summary with the class by selecting the presenter for their team.

Share Out:

- Each team has 1 minute to present their summaries to the class.

- Encourage students to note key points from each section as they listen to other groups.

Once the share out has happened-

Teacher Review:

- Conduct a brief class discussion to address any questions or clarify points from the summaries. Reminder of the topic and SEL skill from the video on David’s Story (he solved a problem of being unmotivated and found a solution; SEL skill was Responsible Decision Making and sub-skills.

- Highlight any particularly important or complex guidelines.

- Remind Students they must follow the guidelines as they begin to write and execute their plan. They should revisit this document while they do each component as it is always available in their workbook!

T: Welcome Back! In this second part of the lesson, you and your team will explore your film kits. We will engage in filmmaking practice in the next few lessons. The filmmaking practice activities will offer your production teams a designed experience to become familiar with your film kits and to practice basic techniques for supporting your story narratives.

T: Let’s begin by with watching the film kit video lesson.It is a step by step guide that shows you how to assemble your kits so pay close attention to the video. Later I will also share limitations and rules regarding filming equipment with your production teams from our school and the Connect with Kids regulations; this protocol is in your workbook as well.

Film Kit Exploration

You have approximately 10 minutes to freely record videos and take selfies with the film kits.
It is important to note that any recorded content must be deleted before disassembly. More instructions on actual film footage you will use will be forthcoming when actual production begins.
Refer back to your Film Kit Protocols document, which provides guidance on properly disassembling the film kits and packing them back into their cases.

T: Now that we have watched the video, let’s take a look at the film kit protocol. [link on the slide, open and display]

[Distribute the film kits to each team and go through the protocol and the equipment with students; Remind students the protocol is in their student workbook]

T: The film kit protocol provides instructions on assembly. Use those instructions to explore putting together the equipment in your film kit. You may take some time to explore the materials, take photos and videos, etc.

[Student teams should now assemble their kits and explore the camera and video of the iPad. Teacher should walk around helping student teams as needed]

T: Does anyone want to share about their experience using the equipment? Now, refer to our protocol which requires us to delete photos or images from our work today, and also includes instructions for disassembly of the film kit. Please take five minutes to disassemble and store your film kits.

What does it mean to be an ethical filmmaker?

What are the consequences for you, those on your production team, and people in your film when you share their stories? Have you considered both potential positive and negative outcomes of your documentary?

What risks are you taking by sharing the stories of your interviewees in the documentary? Have you discussed potentially harm that exposing their truths to an audience may have on them personally? professionally?

T: Now let’s think back to our work on responsible decision-making in Lesson 8. Remember there are 3 components and six steps to guide responsible decision-making. Here we will focus on the 3 components, but as they relate to filmmaking. What does it mean to be an ethical filmmaker? This is especially important if you are using documentary to tell someone else’s story. What are the consequences for you, those on your production team, and people in your film when you share their stories? Have you and your interviewees considered both potential positive and negative outcomes of your documentary? Finally, what risks are you taking by sharing the stories of your interviewees in the documentary? Have you discussed potential harm that exposing their truths to an audience may have on them personally? professionally? etc.

[Have students share out and respond to your questions. Relate to their experiences of having someone relate an incident they were involved in - Was it told correctly? How did it feel?]

T: Next, we will explore a new SEL concept, Self-Awareness as we continue to learn about the film kits and concepts that you will need to execute your final projects.
