Writing Workshop

  • Today you will fill out 4 options for your story as well as write possible first sentences. You will fill out a sheet with 4 possibilities and turn in to me today.
  • While you’re plotting your stories or revising your plots, you might want to stop and ask yourself, what is my story really about? What is the truth in what I am trying to say in this fictional story? How can the shape of my story--where it stops, where it ends, maybe even the peak of the arc--showcase the truth of what I am saying?
  • Monday we will begin drafting your stories.
  • After 20 minutes of writing you can switch to working on WWW.

Reading Workshop

  • Partner share: last night, when you read for 30 minutes, how many pages did you read? How many pages have your read towards your goal this week? Look at your yellow sheets and write how many pages you have read since Wed. in your planner under Friday.
  • Then share your notes/timeline from reading last night. I will come around and check them off.
  • Review Character traits, evidence, theory charts, and character emotional/traits timeline.
  • Certain traits matter more than others, because they influence what happens in the story.
  • Next week we will start reading our novels from our course of study; since it is a deep study of character, make sure you are focusing on fiction for this unit.

“Popularity “con’t

  • Which of Will’s traits are the most important? Why?
  • As I read the rest of the story in chunks, think about which trait or traits will be the most important in this story because they influence what happens in the story. Be ready to share the trait and evidence each time I stop reading.
  • Be open to revising your theories about which trait influences the story as I read further into the story and you are able to collect more evidence.
  • SSR 20 minutes: take notes/sticky notes or writing in your notebook about the trait that matters most in your book at this point and why. Collect 1-3 pieces of evidence, and add page numbers next to the evidence..

Exit Notes

Today I would like some feedback from you about a few things.

  • We will start book talks next. I prefer short powerpoint/slides presentations with an introduction, graphics, favorite quote and why, short summary, why you like it and recommend it to others, and a short video/trailer for the book. What do you like to have in a book talk?
  • We have finished 3 weeks of school. Time to check in. How are you doing? What is going well for you in this class? What is challenging?
  • Anything you would like to tell me/share with me? Is there anything else I could be doing to support you in being successful and happy in this class?
