Dear Families,

Welcome back to a new school year! I’m Cherie Paolucci, and I'm thrilled to be your child's teacher. This will be my third-year teaching, and I've been a part of D62 for those three years. I live in Des Plaines with my husband, 12-year-old twins, our dog, and a bearded dragon . I received my Master’s in Elementary Education at National Louis University. In my free time, I enjoy baking, reading, and traveling . This summer was filled with all three!

I'm really excited about first grade. We have lots of fun and exciting learning opportunities planned. I can't wait to see what this year has in store for your child, and I'm looking forward to working together with you.

In the attached packet, you'll find important information about our subjects, curriculum, school day schedule, expectations, and a few forms that need to be filled out and returned to school with your child.

I'm truly looking forward to a fantastic year with your child. I have many exciting things planned and I'm eager to get started!

THINGS TO

KNOW

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Our elementary school curriculum covers language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and arts. Students will develop reading, writing, and math skills, explore scientific concepts, engage with history, and develop a global perspective through geography. They will also have opportunities for creative expression in visual arts, music, and drama. Our goal is to provide a well-rounded education that prepares students for academic success while fostering curiosity and a love for learning.

HOMEWORK POLICY

At the beginning of the school year, homework will not be sent home daily. Work that is not finished during the school day will become homework.

As routines and schedules are learned, students will be sent home with weekly homework assignments. More information will be provided at that time.

GRADES

Our district utilizes Standard-Based Grading. Below is what the grades will look like on Tyler, rather than percentages…

EX (Exceeding): In addition to the “Meets” criteria, student demonstrates more complex learning that goes beyond what was explicitly taught. It is rare for a student to achieve an EX, especially in the first two trimesters.

ME (Meeting): Student consistently meets grade level standards. Student applies concepts at a proficient level. The goal for all students is to perform at an ME level by the end of the year.

AP (Approaching): Student is approaching an understanding of grade level standards. Student applies concepts with support. It is common for students to receive an AP in their first two trimesters.

BL (Below): Student is below in their understanding of grade level standards. Student does not apply concepts, even with additional support. Students in the BL range require heavy support to understand the specified standard.

TECHNOLOGY

Students are required to leave their iPad at school overnight to charge. They will not be bringing them home daily.

We ask that you please keep a pair of extra “over-ear” headphones in your child’s locker. These tend to break very easily.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

Drop-off and Pick-up will be done at the horseshoe between Cumberland and Chippewa School. Students will go in/out of door #5 on the playground, near the slide.

There are various ways you can get involved, such as volunteering in-class activities, joining our parent-teacher organization, or attending school events. We encourage open communication, so please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns, or suggestions. Together, we can create a supportive and enriching learning environment for your child. EL PUSH-IN MODEL

Mrs. Biega will push into the first-grade classrooms during English Language Arts and Math.  Mrs. Mullane, Mrs. Gonzalez, Mrs. Paolucci and Mrs. Biega engage students during small group and independent practice centers. The EL teacher helps all students based on their academic needs through:

  • Sensory supports such as real-life objects, illustrations, diagrams, and drawings.
  • Graphic supports such as charts and graphic organizers
  • Interactive supports such as working with partners and small groups

This benefits all students since it maximizes student to student interactions and differentiated instruction.
