Description of Lesson

Students will create a cityscape using simple lines and shapes showing perspective in the style of the book “Rose’s Garden” by Peter H. Reynolds. Students will add painted paper flowers to show contrast between a black and white line drawing and colorful flowers. The lesson will have themes of nature, helping the environment, and creating a more colorful community.

Lesson Goals

  • I can discuss, explain, and describe how to improve my community and cultivate a more sustainable environment after reading the book “Rose’s Garden” by Peter H. Reynolds
  • I can draw a city using lines and shapes.

*optional* I can show perspective in my cityscape drawing.

  • I can create painted papers in many different colors and patterns.
  • I can cut and glue a colorful garden in front of my black and white cityscape drawing.

  • High-quality, 8X10 white paper (Free from Art to Remember)

  • Ruler
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Black permanent fine tip marker
  • Painted paper scraps in various colors
  • Colored permanent fine tip markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step 5 Add painted paper flowers in front of your city. Don’t forget the stems and leaves!

Step 6 You can add color to your cities using watercolor or markers. This is optional but can be fun to make your city super colorful!
