The need

  • national parks are a major feature of New Zealand
  • some are UNESCO World Heritage sites
  • several are major destinations for international visitors
  • good information about the national parks is not always readily available online, or is spread across a large number of sources
  • a Wikipedia article can bring scattered information together to create a readily accessible and easy-to-navigate account that is a valuable educational resource
  • But, the Wikipedia articles are currently in a relatively poor state

Project overview

  • Many of the articles about our National Parks are badly in need of improvement
    • This topic has been discussed in the past, but with little sustained progress
  • A collaborative project was launched in early 2024 to:
    • “significantly improve the quality of articles on our national parks, ideally to the point that they could be nominated for Good or Featured Article status”
    • The project page is : WikiProject New Zealand/National parks
    • Multiple editors are involved
