Dear Parents and Guardians:
I hope you all enjoyed spending time with family and friends over the Thanksgiving holiday. Our school is very fortunate to have a partnership in education with the Pew Foundation over the years. This organization has made our Thanksgiving book exchange possible so students were able to take quality text home to read over the break. There will be another book exchange taking place in December too, before the winter holiday. Thank you for your partnership in promoting a love of reading at home with your child.
Please get involved in our SAC and PTO organizations. These are great ways to learn about what is happening at PSE as well as connect with other families. Your voice and ideas are important, and together we can make great things happen for the students at PSE!

Student attendance is so important to their success. Please be sure students are in attendance and on time daily. If a student is out for a legitimate reason, such as an illness, please be sure to send in an excuse note with the student when they return to school so we can update their attendance as an excused absence. If a student is out more than 3 days, a note from their doctors office is required.
We appreciate your help in this so students daily attendance is accurate, and we can provide the necessary supports so your child can be successful.

PTO meets the first Thursday of each month. We will meet Thursday, December 2nd at 5:30 pm in the media center. We hope to see you there!

What is a School Advisory Council?
The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a team of people representing various segments of the community–parents, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, business/industry members and other interested community partners. The purpose of a SAC is to assist in the preparation and evaluation of the results of the school improvement plan and to assist the principal with the annual school budget.
Join us at our next meeting in January.
*There is no SAC meeting in the month of December.

As we approach the end of 2021, we are so proud of all our kindergarteners and all that they have accomplished!
We have started Unit 4 of our reading curriculum. The focus is on all the different stories that writers tell. Students enjoy reading, writing, and listening to all the different stories their teachers read. During the next few weeks, be sure to ask your students what they have been reading.
This month we will finish Unit 3 in Math! This unit has had to do with number sense. We have been practicing counting to 100, as well as addition and subtraction! This month we will take our second I-Ready Math Assessment. We know that all of our students will do very well!
You should have received Interim Benchmark score 2 from your students. Please take the time to review that and contact your child's teacher if you have any questions! As always, do your best to read with or to your child every night!
Kindergarten:
First Grade:
We are coming to the end of 2021 and we can't believe how much our first graders have grown since August! We are so excited to see them grow even more in 2022!
Our first graders are hard at work in reading, using our new curriculum to learn how to be a good citizen, use context clues, and find relevant details in a text. Be on the lookout for books that come home with your child. Students must read for at least 10 minutes every night!
In math, we are learning more strategies for fluent addition and subtraction within 20. You may have seen some red and pink flashcards at home. These flashcards are great study tools for your student. Our first grade mathematicians could grow even further by increasing their fluency in math facts.
In science / social studies, our first graders are finishing our unit on living things and moving toward learning about our heaven and earth.

Second Grade:
It is the most wonderful time of the year! Students are finishing the second quarter and are taking their second iReady math assessment.
This month in math we are finishing Unit 4 becoming fluent in adding and subtracting within 100, determining unknown whole numbers in an equation, determining odd and even numbers up to 20, and using addition to find the total number of objects in a matrix. Don't be left behind by not practicing your facts!
Historically, maps and globes have been a great tool for navigating the world. Some very famous people have used them, like Christopher Columbus and Santa! Students will have hands-on experience with maps and globes this month in Social Studies.
In Science students will really be digging into Earth's surface and climate to finish our Unit 3 - get ready to get dirty!
In Benchmark we'll be reading about famous inventors like Thomas Edison and George Washington Carver, as well as less-known figures like Mary Anderson, who invented the first windshield wiper. Our unit of study is called “Solving Problems Through Technology” and we will focus on the impact of different inventions and how they helped people solve problems. Read with your child every day and practice those sight words. Maybe your child will become the next GREAT inventor!
Third Grade
3rd Grade is Growing Strong
Happy holidays to all our families! We are very excited to jump into December and all that we will learn this month.
In reading we begin our new unit "Advancement in Technology". We will read biographies of inventors and learn about their technological innovations and inventions. We will also be reading informational texts on communication technologies of the past and present. When writing, students will choose a science or technology topic on which to write an opinion essay.
In science, we will continue to learn about animal classification categories.
In math, we will learn to count the hour within the minutes to find the elapsed time. We will also measure and estimate volumes of liquids and masses of objects, and solve word problems using those measurements.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher at any time. The third grade teachers sincerely wish you a safe and happy holiday season and a new year.

Our amazing fourth graders have had a busy couple of months and have worked hard and mastered many new skills this second quarter.
Our readers have been working to determine the point of view of the characters' perspectives. We have been working hard on text annotation to get information about characters and their perspectives in a text using first or third person. They have been adding fictional stories by creating new fictional scenes using information and events that have happened before. Our students have been hard at work applying grammar and spelling skills to their reading and writing strategies.
In math, we have continued to master multiplication and division using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationships between multiplication and division. Math isn't just about numbers, so our fourth graders have also been learning to use reading comprehension and writing to help them solve multi-step word problems. Reading the problems, understanding the questions, following directions, showing your work / thinking, checking if your answer makes sense, and using strategies that you have been taught and explaining your thinking in written form are all part of being successful as a fourth grade math student. In fourth grade, the answer to the problem is not enough. You have to KNOW, SHOW and EXPLAIN how you got that answer.
Our scientists are finishing an exciting unit on the characteristics of space and Earth. Students love our hands on scientific investigations we do in class. Ask them to explain what they have learned. Hopefully they can teach you something new.
Remember that listening and speaking are an important part of learning. You can help your child's teacher tremendously by working on these skills at home. Give your child oral instructions and see if he can follow them. If not, check to see if they were actually listening. Have conversations with your child at home. Conversations can be on any topic. Ask your child to explain her thought to you. Discuss her responses and make sure they make sense. This is a great way to spend time talking to your child while helping him master important skills.
Fourth Grade

Fifth grade is ready to end in 2021!
In math, we are completing work with fractions. Students will learn to interpret fractions as a form of division. They will also practice dividing fractions by another fraction.
Our scientists are learning about the weather and climate. Talk to your child about what the weather is like each day, noting things like temperature and humidity!
In reading we continue to work with non-fiction texts. During this month, we will use non-fiction to learn about the impact of technology throughout our history and today. Students will practice skills such as finding the main idea of a text, determining the structure of the text, and using context clues to find the meaning of new vocabulary words. We will also write an opinion essay on a science or technology topic, learning how to support our opinions with reasons and evidence. Students will use this skill on the FSA writing test this year, as well as in their daily lives!
Our learning continues at school and at home! Please remember that your child reads at home every night and completes homework assigned by their teacher. Don't forget to log into iReady and practice at home if you can.

We are proud to support your children’s academic, social/emotional, and college/career needs at school!
We are excited to teach Child Safety Matters - a lesson on personal safety, to our KG-2nd grade students! Opt forms went home in November and parent information sheets will go home following the lesson.
We offered a Maturation class to our 4th and 5th graders in late November. We find it to be helpful in starting the conversation about healthy development.
