Emerging Parties Lead Up to Civil War

The Republican Party wanted to preserve the Union and end slavery. The Southern Democrats wanted to keep slavery and the Northern Democrats were in between on the slavery issue.

Conscription/ Military Draft

The poster was to encourage men to volunteer to fight in the war. Majority of the men who were permanently drafted were immigrants and men of impoverished classes at first. However later the military requirements changed.

Lincoln’s Leadership

Lincoln leading his Union Soldiers through technology. He telegraphed orders to the army.

Emancipation Proclamation

It freed all slaves in the Confederate states. The freed slaves enlisted into the Union Army.

Scalawags and Carpetbaggers

Scalawags headed north for money opportunities or to get on the Union side.

Carpetbaggers went south for profit or to aid the freedmen in education and freedom.

Freedmen’s Bureau

The Freedmen’s Bureau, a secret society which aided the freed slaves in the South.

Lincoln’s 10 Percent Plan

Lincoln’s Ten Percent Plan called for complete action in mending the Union.

13, 14, 15 Amendments

The Amendments gained African Americans their freedom and Civil Rights. The 13th freed the slaves, 14th gave citizenship, and 15th allowed black men to vote and join politics.

Tenure of Office Act

The Act was passed due to Jackson removing a Senate official. It said that the President cannot remove any cabinet member without senatorial consent.

Military Reconstruction Act

5 Military Districts were put into place. A Union Soldier was to guide a Confederate Army. State Constitutional Conventions were to draft new governing documents for black men suffrage.

Compromise of 1877

The Compromise caused Chaos to the Civil Rights Act. The the Radical Republicans allowed the Southern Democrats to form their own State Governments, in exchange of Hayes being president. Later, the South ruined the freedom of the freed blacks.
