HBC&U LEGACIES
Rakiba Mitchell,
MA, LPC, NCC
Founder & CEO
“My mother and father met at ‘Skegee’ back when it was an institute. As a kid I was exposed to red dirt, lots of hills, the Chicken Coop and the brilliance of George Washington Carver.”
Tracey Thomas,
M.Ed, LLPC
Vice President
“It was my friends and family. The Cosby Show & A Different World gave me more interest. I am so proud that I choose an HBCU and I encourage my students and my own children to broaden their options by considering HBCUS as well.”
Lance Woods,
BBA
HBCU Lifestyle & Culture Consultant
“My guidance counselor. That’s it, saved my life. Forever thankful to attend & graduate from Tennessee State University!”
LTC Leonard Rusher,
MBA
Finance & Funding Consultant
“My parents attended Barber-Scotia College and Savannah State. Back then if you were black you didn’t have many options. If you wanted to be educated, you went to an HBCU.”
Allan Washington
HBCU Sports Recruitment Consultant
“Attending an HBCU was the best decision that I’ve ever made. Being that I wasn’t the strongest student Kentucky State gave me the discipline that I needed.”
Sonya Hactcher-Griggs
HBCU Professional Resources Consultant
“Unlike my teammates, I grew up in a small town in Georgia. The HBCU culture is all that I knew so when it was time to go to college I went back home to Albany State University.”
Anneatra Kaplan
HBCU Sports Programs Consultant
“I created my own path. A group of us graduated and started the swim program at my HBCU. It helped to shape the culture of the school.”
WHO ARE WE? MEET OUR TEAM
We are a team of counselors, administrators, ROTC instructors, coaches, professors, educational consultants, teachers, veterans AND DPS ALUMS who are proud HBCU Advocates!
FACT: Anyone & Everyone CAN advocate for HBCUs…
SO SHOULD YOU!
Here’s what most people don’t know:
🔅We travel to conferences, events and schools to provide HBCU specific exploration, application and financing resources to other educators (mostly counselors)
🔆Our team is comprised of 3 High School Counselors, 1 Assistant Principal and a retired ROTC instructor who served 33 years in the military. We are PUBLIC school educators who were educated in Detroit Public Schools. Most of us still serve in the district.
🔆We do not receive financial assistance or compensation to attend conferences but we are REQUIRED to do professional development to maintain our credentials (and employment status)

Legacies
WE ARE THE AUTHORS OF OUR LEGACIES!
Our journey began out of necessity.
As experienced educators, we recognize that although there are over one hundred Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) most of our students are unfamiliar.
This is particularly challenging for us, being from Detroit where most of our students are of color. We began this work because we were inspired by our students’ needs and our shared passion.
We needed to develop the tools necessary to change the narrative and ensure that the college and career culture in various educational spaces is HBCU-inclusive. It is of particular interest that students who look like us learn that there are places designed for us!
We provide students with exploration, application, and funding resources that are HBCU-specific. We also support educators by creating the context and providing tools so that their students receive information that is accurate and resourceful. If WE can promote Harvard, UCLA, and NYU then, WE can also promote Hampton, Xavier, and Morgan State University with the same enthusiasm.
All students must become aware of ALL post-secondary options. HBCUs MATTER!
We travel to conferences, events, and schools to provide HBCU-specific exploration, application, and financing resources to other educators (mostly counselors).
