Music class schedules and general info:

Mt. Horeb School: Day 1 (am only), Day 2, Day 3

Central School: Day 1 (pm only), Day 4, Day 5, Day 6

All students will come to music class in-person with their class for a 50-minute music lesson once during a 6-day rotation.

Grade K overview:

Instruction at the kindergarten level is considered “experiential”. Students will learn about their voices and the fundamentals of music through singing and body movement.

Areas of exploration will include:

  • Vocal and sound exploration
  • Feeling and discovering steady beat
  • Fast and slow music
  • High and low pitches and instruments
  • Breathing awareness and phrases
  • Long and short sounds

Grade 1 overview:

Students in grade 1 will be introduced to rhythmic and melodic notation (reading and writing music) using both iconic and standard musical notation.

Students will:

  • Isolate short rhythm patterns in a variety of songs and learn notation for:
    • Steady beat/ Quarter notes
    • Double eighth notes
    • Quarter rest
  • Isolate short 2-3 note melodic (tune) patterns in a variety of songs and learn syllables, hand signs and staff notation for:
    • So and mi
    • So, la, mi

Grade 2 overview:

Students in grade 2 will reinforce (reading and writing music) using both iconic and standard musical notation.

Students will:

  • Isolate short rhythm patterns in a variety of songs and learn notation for:
    • half-notes
    • Triple eighth notes
    • Dotted quarter note/ rest
  • Isolate short 3- 4 melodic (tune) patterns in a variety of songs and learn syllables, hand signs and staff notation for:
    • So, mi-la
    • So-do/ So-mi-do
    • So- mi- re- do

Grade 3 overview:

Students in grade 3 will be learning to play the recorder in music class

Students will:

  • Isolate rhythm patterns in a variety of songs and learn notation for:
    • half-notes
    • Triple eighth notes
    • Dotted quarter note/ rest
  • Isolate short 3- 4 melodic (tune) patterns in a variety of songs and learn syllables, hand signs and staff notation and alphabetic notes for:
    • Mi- re- do (B- A- G)
    • Do- so, Do- so, -la, (G- E,- D,)
    • So- mi- re- do (D- G- A- B)

Students in grade 4 will reinforce (reading and writing music) using both iconic and standard musical notation.

Students will:

Grading

Student will be holistically assessed in participation/ effort (50% of grade), singing progress (25%), and musical skill progress (25%).

EEX= Exceeds expectations

MEX= Meets expectations

BEX= Below expectations

UG= Ungraded

NG= No grade given

Sing-alongs

Sing-alongs:

  • develop and encourage singing.
  • reinforce and introduce songs used in lessons.
  • present important and enjoyable seasonal and cultural song literature and stories that may not be used during instruction.

Concerts

Dates for concerts are in the works.

Grades 1 & 2 will perform in the same concert during school hours

Grades 4 & 5 will perform together in an evening concert (attendance is mandatory and will count as a test grade)

Grade 3 will perform on recorders at the afternoon band concert

Grade K will perform at their moving up ceremony

In the event that we cannot hold in-person concerts, students will be videoed and performances will be shared with parents.
