Feb 8 School Board Meeting - QnA

  • Is math offered during summer school?

Yes for elementary. Middle school bridge to Algebra is only offered at some schools, and is recommended by Bellwether for 2025, but hoping sooner.

  • Is math intervention staffed at each school?

Not necessarily. Principals can use their tiered staffing to have a dedicated math interventionist. For ex, Henley has a staff member who is part-time counselor and part-time math intervention. But, need is high across schools.

  • Will ACPS use the All-in-Virginia math technology Zearn?

Yes, this is a powerful math technology for supporting students. Licenses have been delayed by VDOE, but hope to have in place soon. Will be paid for through the end of next school year. Already in use at one middle school.

  • Does ACPS use a math screener for Algebra? Reteach skills?

Bellwether did recommend a Math 8 screener. VDOE offers a readiness assessment. ACPS has growth assessment data from VDOE plus Q3 quarterly assessment data and SOL scores which they’re hoping to use vs. another new assessment. May give a short assessment at the end of year to help plan for start of next school year.

It’s less about reteaching the same skills. More about moving forward and doing mini-lessons of 10 minutes to catch up. Resources are being provided to teachers along with professional development.

Opt-Out / Acceleration Policy

To increase equitable enrollment in 8th grade Algebra I, many school districts have successfully implemented an “Opt-Out” strategy.

All 5th grade students who score well on SOLs are automatically enrolled in the advanced math course. No parent or teacher approval is required, but parents can opt-out.

Results = GREAT, both for equitable enrollment AND student outcomes.

See Dallas ISD, North Carolina and Texas, plus Jan 2024 Arlington PS Report recommending expanding their approach in math to ELA, science and social studies.
