Subject Information

Subject Information

Head of Maths-Mr Metcalf

  • Importance of having the correct equipment especially bringing in a scientific calculator for every lesson. Ideally they need the Casio Fx-83GT CW or Fx-85GT CW
  • These can be purchased via Scopay or any retailer.
  • Student not having an appropriate calculator has been highlighted in the examiners report as a common area for students dropping marks on calculator questions.

31 of 44

Subject Information

Director of Science-Ms Collingwood

* Read the question - focus on what you do know that relates to the question, not what you don't recognise.

* Bring a calculator, ruler, pencil and pens to all science exams so they can be used so use them and it is best to practice using them in class. You cannot get marks for precise graphs if drawn in pen.

* Don't be afraid to leave a blank space and come back to it, but always be sure to answer every question in the end.

* Yr 9/10 and 11 work will be examined.

* Try every exam question/task as picking up one or two marks will help

* Chemistry - set up your periodic table with important notes about the groups, periods, trends, etc. You will need this awareness in the exams

* Physics - there are a number of equations you need to be able to recall - these need to be learnt as will not be given in the exams.

English Revision Classroom

dwes4aq

  • Please ensure that your son/daughter has joined this classroom. It offers a range of resources available to support their revision of Language and Literature.
  • We would advise students to obtain a revision book for the Literature texts and the Language skills. Our exam board is Edexcel. There are some excellent ones published by CGP.
  • Once content has been revisited, the best revision is planning for and completing developed exam responses under timed conditions.
  • Each week, as well as Period 6 on a Monday, teachers will be running online sessions that will offer support for the homework that has been set that week. Links to join online will be sent out by individual teachers to their classes.
  • Tassomai doesn’t replace more standard revision - it is in addition to.

33 of 44

GCSE Spanish - AQA

By your next mocks, we will have studied every topic, so all the content will have been seen.

What can you do to improve? How can you do your best?

  • You need to learn the vocabulary for every topic (you have all the links on Google Classroom and your progress portfolio). This is the most important thing as it impacts your performance in the 4 papers.
  • Attend Period 6 (on a Thursday)
  • Complete work at home that practices the different skills (specially reading and writing). You can use the revision guides for this. You also have links to videos to support with the different questions in your progress portfolio. Ask the teacher for feedback for this independent work.
  • Use the feedback from your mocks in Year 10.

34 of 44

GCSE History - AQA

What have we covered?

  • Paper 1 A/D - America, Opportunity and Inequality, 1920-1973
  • Paper 1 B/B - Conflict and tension, the interwar years: 1918-1939
  • Paper 2 A/A - Health and the people: c.1000 - present day

How can I prepare and revise for the November mock exams?

  • Use the performance portfolio as the first port of call. The portfolio features a complete topic list, revision videos, RAG-rating, Knowledge Organisers, practice questions, and extended reading.
  • Use your class books and notes, and Google Classroom. These contain all the high-quality resources you need to revise each topic. The Classroom contains all previously covered material.
  • Use Tassomai and Seneca. Remember that Tassomai does NOT cover Conflict & Tension - you’ll need Seneca for that.
  • Use the feedback from mocks in Year 10 to identify areas of focus and practice questions.

35 of 44

GCSE Geography - Edexcel B

How will I be assessed in GCSE Geography?

Three exams - 1hr 30 minutes each

Paper 1 - Geographical Issues: Development, Challenges of an Urbanising World and Hazardous Earth

Paper 2 - UK Geographical Issues: The Uk’s Evolving Physical Landscape (Geology, Coasts and Rivers) and The UK’s Evolving Human Landscape.

Paper 3 - Making Geographical Decisions: People and the Biosphere, Consuming Energy Resources and Forests Under Threat.

How can I prepare well to show off what I know?

Students will be given access to a shared drive (linked via their performance portfolio) that contains multiple resources to help them prepare for the mock exams in November and the Summer exam series in May and June 2024.

This includes video walkthroughs for answers, case study booklets, revision crib sheets and masterclasses.

The revision guide opposite is the one that we recommend for this course.

Media Studies & Film Studies

NEA in both Media + Film Studies is worth 30% the final GCSE grade.

Having a non-examined assessment (NEA) unit in these subjects is a fantastic opportunity for the students to attain marks towards their GCSE before the summer and secure part of their grade prior to the exams.

It is hard to fully communicate quite how important the NEA is to students’ final grades, so your support and investment in the following areas is greatly appreciated:

  • ENSURE STUDENTS ATTEND P6 SESSIONS: These are NEA focused for M1.
    • They will receive extra support with practical work and extended writing tasks.
    • It’s a great time for them to take relevant photos (media) or shoot additional footage (film).
    • If they have a clash, or transport issues on that day, they are welcome to arrange another day - just ask.
  • TALK TO THEM ABOUT THEIR WORK: Encouraging students to talk through how their work meets the requirement of the brief can really help them problem solve and make progress. (Briefs are on the google classrooms)
  • CHECK GOOGLE CLASSROOM: Encouraging the students to complete homework with you or to talk through what they have done after is a really useful way of supporting them meet deadlines or identifying a need for additional support.
  • KEEP COMMUNICATING: Contact Ms Entacott (lucy.entacott@mascallsacademy.org.uk) if you have any concerns or question about the NEA work.

NEA DEADLINE: End of Module 1
