SEMM 1513Introduction to Design
Concept Selection
Concept Selection
Concept generation phase develops a number of concepts.
Hence, the next step is to select the final concept to be further developed.
Problems
Concept Selection: Matrix Selection
Component of Matrix Selection
The selection process will compare each criteria for each concept with datum.
Matrix Selection: Criteria and Weightage
Importance of criteria and weightage
Case 1
Performance : 1
Manufacturing: 0
Aesthetic: 0
The final product may perform very well, but may require very precision manufacturing process and looks ugly
Case 2
Performance : 0
Manufacturing: 1
Aesthetic: 0
The final product can be fabricated, but may not work and look ugly
Case 3
Performance : 0
Manufacturing: 0
Aesthetic: 1
The final product may look nice, but may not work and very expensive to fabricate.perform very well, but may be unable to be manufacture and ugly
Solution:
Performance : 0.6 or 60%
Manufacturing/production : 0.3 or 30%
Aesthetic : 0.1 or 10%
Matrix Selection: Criteria
Bad Criteria
Improved Criteria
Good Criteria
Datum
One of the concept or similar product in market
For each criterion, the concept will be compared with the same of criterion of the datum.
Range of mark depends on type of selection matrix
Screening and Scoring Matrix
Screening Matrix: when the number of concepts is larger than 6.
Scoring Matrix: when the number of concepts is equal or less than 6.
Meaning of total mark
Positive: the concept is better than the datum
Negative: the concept is worse than the datum
Highest mark amongst the concepts: the best concepts
Two concepts have equal mark: both concepts may have similar features which can be combined to develop a new concept
Reflection of final design
Based on the total mark: the concept with the highest mark will be selected as the final concept.
However, there is a number of criteria on the final concept that is marked as -2,-1,0,1.
To ensure better final design, the criteria that has been marked as -2, -1, 0, 1 should be reflected whether the mark can be improved to 2 if possible.
Final Design
The final design can be
