Elective: A course that you “choose” to take based on your own individual interest.

Evergreen as you know is a large school made up of about 950 students led by our amazing staff- admins, teachers, and support staff.

We brag about our diversity with students who speak many languages and come from many backgrounds.

Our day at Evergreen starts with the arrival of our students by bus, car, or walking. Typically our lunch room is filled with students during breakfast and the hallways buzz with energy until the 7:30 am Bell rings and first period starts.

Each day students take 6 classes or 6 periods at Evergreen. Each period is about 55 minutes long. In between each period students use the hallway to transition from one classroom to the other.

Our school year is broken down into semesters. A semester is ½ a year. We have two of those.

Some classes you will take all year (or for two semesters) and some classes you will take for half a year (or one semester). Some classes you are required to take and some classes you get to choose. As you can see here, 6th grade students take English, Math, and Science all year. However, 6th grade students take Physical Education ( or PE), Health, and History for only ½ a year or one semester. Finally, students get to take classes they choose, which we call electives. You will get to make your requests today.

At Evergreen we also have a lunch & recess. Half of the 6th graders go to lunch first and half to recess and then they swap.

Our day does not end at Evergreen when the bell rings at 2:05. While some students need to go home there are so many fun extracurricular activities for students to participate in after school. There are many clubs like drama, Rainbow Unity, art, Honors Society, yearbook, and robotics but there are also sports offered too. In the 6^th grade students cannot compete in sports but they can participate in XC, Wrestling, and track. In addition, we always have academic support available for students after school.

Now, let’s talk about the elective choice. Every 6th grader will choose 2 Fine Arts class (their first choice & their second choice) and 4 “Other” Electives (their two top electives and their alternates). An alternate is a class that you choose if you don’t get into your first choice.

There are three music options: Choir, Band, and Orchestra. These are great opportunities for students to learn an instrument or how to sing and to be a part of a performance based class. Students need to start band and orchestra in the 6^th grade. Students often say the music program is the best part about middle school.

Students also have an opportunity to take Art 6, AVID, Integrated Tech I, Exploring Industrial Tech, Exploring Robotics, and Lifetime PE. Let’s learn more about these options.

In this class, students will learn about art in a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, clay and modeling.

General Music

Offers students an opportunity to learn about music across genres. Students may engage in singing, playing instrument, and learn about the history of musical movements.

Integrated Tech 1 (1 Semester)

In this class, students will be introduced to various areas of technology: digital literacy skills, keyboarding, 3D modeling, block coding, and animation.

Exploring Robotics (1 Semester)

In this STEM class, students will learn coding and engineering. They will learn skills to think critically, develop solutions to problems, test solutions, collect and interpret data, and understand the scientific process.

Exploring Industrial Tech (1 Semester)

In this class, students will be introduced to safety and tools of an industrial shop. Students will design and produce a variety of projects.

AVID 6 (Year Long)

Students will develop skills to succeed in middle school, high school & beyond.

Students can choose to take AVID course throughout middle school and high school.

Lifetime PE (1 Semester)

In this class, students will focus on both fitness and individual sports such as bowling, archery, tennis, track and field, yoga, and pickleball.
