Overview of 1:1 Student Guidebook

Berkeley School District 87 will provide a Chromebook to all students in 2nd - 8th grade. Berkeley School District believes providing students with technology, and teaching them to effectively use that technology, will help develop empowered learners who are prepared for future success.

*This guidebook will be reviewed with students by their classroom teacher or advisory teacher at the beginning of the school year.

Ownership: Cleaning Chromebooks

Directions

  1. Shut down Chromebook and unplug the power cord.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth only

OR

Use an unscented wipe/slightly damp lint-free cloth

*If any moisture is used for cleaning, a lint-free cloth must be used to dry the Chromebook

  • Gently wipe the exterior, keyboard, & screen (touchscreen only)
  • Wipe any excess moisture with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.

*Do not get moisture in any openings.

*Only use moisture on touchscreen Chromebook screen

What to do if a Chromebook is damaged?

Student Responsibilities:

Students should be checking their chromebook each time they use it. If your Chromebook is ever damaged:

  1. Tell your teacher
  2. Complete the paper Chromebook Repair Ticket

Teacher Responsibilities:

Teachers should be regularly checking Chromebooks during homeroom/advisory time. If there is a Chromebook that has physical damage:

  1. Complete Skyward Physical Misuse/Damage Form
  2. Call the student’s parent
  3. Have student review appropriate part of the 1:1 Student Guidebook

Student Chromebook Damage

With the privilege of being assigned a Chromebook comes responsibility. Students are responsible for taking care of their Chromebook and preventing damage at all times. Students must notify their teacher immediately if their Chromebook is damaged so the proper steps can be taken to repair the Chromebook. Below are possible consequences for damaged technology.

School administration will be notified when any Skyward Damage form is submitted. Students/Parents may be financially responsible for damaged Chromebooks. Final decisions on fees owed are determined by the school and District administration.

Library Loaner Chromebooks

Possible Discussion Question/Activity - Why will students not receive a library loaner in some situations?

You WILL receive a loaner Chromebook from the library if:

  1. Your Chromebook has a technical issue
  2. The damage was caused by someone else
  3. Students can take this loaner chromebook from class to class and home each day.

Example: You had your computer safely on your desk and someone walked by and accidentally knocked it to the ground causing the screen to break.

You WILL NOT receive a loaner Chromebook from the library if:

  1. Your Chromebook was damaged because of irresponsible behavior
  2. You intentionally caused damage to your Chromebook

Example: You left a pencil on your Chromebook keyboard, closed the Chromebook, & cracked the screen.

*Students may receive the classroom Chromebook loaner at the discretion of the teacher and/or administrator.

Need the Internet at Home?

Mobile Hotspot Program

Berkeley School District has been awarded Mobile Wireless Hotspots to distribute to students who:

  1. have no home Internet access
  2. have home Internet access that is not adequate for school related work

If you are interested in obtaining a mobile wireless hotspot for the 2019-2020 school year, complete the Parent/Guardian Hotspot Consent Form and submit it to your school office at the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
