Welcome to First Grade!
I am so glad we are going to be working together this school year! I have always wanted to be a teacher and even drew myself as a teacher in a first grade assignment titled “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s amazing to be able to fulfill my dream every day with your children at Valley. I would like my classroom to be a place where all children can feel safe and loved. We will be learning how to manage conflict and treat ourselves, as well as others, with respect. I hope that you will work with me in making sure we all – you, your child, and myself, feel good about our experiences this year!
My Family
My husband Brian and I have been married for 27 years and have two children. Bo is 19 years old and is a sophomore at George Washington University in Washington D.C. studying civil engineering. Maggie is 17 years old and she will be in 12th grade at Kettering-Fairmont High School. You will hear lots of stories about my family and hopefully get to meet them as Bo and Maggie LOVE to come help in my classroom when they can.
We love animals and have a lot of pets!

Hobbies
I love spending time outdoors hiking, camping and being with my family! We love to travel and especially love visiting historic places and National Parks. At home I love to read, sew and fix things around the house. I enjoy volunteering at Carillon Park sometimes where I teach people about Dayton History and sometimes dress up in old fashioned clothes to demonstrate the “old” ways of doing things. I LOVE going to the Cincinnati Zoo and seeing all the amazing animals, even without my kids!.
FUN FACTS
We will:
Class Rules
Be kind
Be safe
Follow directions quickly
Make smart choices
Reading
The only way to become a better reader is to READ, READ, READ! I would expect your child to read 15-20 minutes nightly which can include them reading to you as well as you reading to them. It is also important that you discuss what your child has read as well, to ensure that they are THINKING about what they are reading. At least once a week your child will be bringing home their Reading Envelope to share with you a book they’ve been practicing with me at school. This is their time to show off what they have learned-so please take the time to listen to them and praise them for their reading!
Homework
School is a lot of work. The expectations on your children are high and they do a great job. When they get home from school, they need a break. I would much rather your child spend their evenings with their families, playing outside, participating in activities they enjoy and just relaxing with a good book at bedtime. Occasionally I may ask for some things to be done at home, but I firmly
believe that first graders do not and should
not have nightly homework.
Digital Classroom
We will be using Google Classroom from the start of the school year in order for your child to be familiar with this platform, should we need it. I will also be here to help you and your child if and when that happens.
