The Problem

How can we inspire the curiosity of people towards solar exploration? This is the question asked by the Unlocking the Secrets of the Sun Challenge.

As the exploration of the Sun becomes more and more crucial for us here on Earth, it is important to increase public awareness on this topic. Here are some of the challenges to tackle:

  • Creating a method to to improve public knowledge
  • Making the public understand the value of solar exploration

Our Solution

Resources used:

Canva (graphics): https://www.canva.com/

Freepik (mockup devices): <ahref='https://www.freepik.com/psd/mockup'>Mockup psd created by syifa5610 - www.freepik.com</a>

To solve this problem, we’ve decided to develop our own comprehensive website. “Better than Icarus” contains all the information needed to understand the basic concepts of solar exploration.

The website includes:

  • A section dedicated to the effects the Sun has on people’s daily lives
  • An insight into NASA’s latest solar mission, Parker Solar Probe
  • An interactive timeline that connects to cards giving details about all the other old and current missions
  • A call to action asking for teens and adults to send their future mission ideas and for kids to send a drawing

The Future

Although the website is already fully-operational as it is, there are some thing that we would like to add in the future, so that it becomes even more accessible:

  1. The «Young Minds» section: a page dedicated to children aged 5 to 10 years old, with animated characters and description even easier to understand
  2. «Create your mission»: a simple didactic videogame where users get to choose the specifics of their own solar exploration spacecraft
  3. More quizzes: these would be embedded at the end of each section of the website so people can test their knowledge
  4. A Twitch channel: the team could livestream the launches of the future solar missions and make more educational content

There’s more…

In order to reach as many people as possible, we have opened some social media accounts that complement the website. Here are the ones we have already set up:

  • Instagram (@betterthanicarus)
  • Telegram (Parker Solar Probe)
  • YouTube (Better than Icarus)
