A very long time ago, there was a woman called Hannah.

Hannah wanted to have a baby, but she hadn’t yet had one.

Hannah felt very sad about this.

Each year, Hannah and her husband went to a place called Shiloh, where they would worship God. One day, when Hannah was at Shiloh, she began to cry because she was so upset that she didn’t have a baby.

He heard Hannah crying. Although her lips were moving, she was praying in her head. Eli thought Hannah was a bit muddled.

Eli was a priest, which meant he worked in God’s house and helped people learn more about God.

Eli saw how upset Hannah was and he felt sorry for her. “Go in peace and may God give you what you have asked for.”

“I am so sad,” Hannah explained to Eli. “I have been praying to God asking him to help me.”

She went and had something to eat.

As Hannah left, she no longer looked so sad.

The next day, Hannah and her husband again worshipped God before returning home.

Soon, Hannah was overjoyed to find she was going to have a baby. When the baby was born, Hannah named him Samuel, which sounds a little bit like “God has heard me” in Hebrew, which is the language Hannah spoke. “I have called him Samuel because I asked God for him” she explained.
