Slavery over the years

  • Slavery was present in many ancient civilizations such as those of the ancient Egyptians , the Greeks and even the Romans

Definitions

  • Slavery : is a condition in which individuals are owned by others , who control where they live and at what they work

  • Chattel slave : is an enslaved person who is owned for ever and whose children and children’s children are automatically enslaved

The Atlantic Slave Trade

  • Definition : The Atlantic slave trade was the selling of 10 to 12 millions Africans slaves that happened in and around the Atlantic Ocean. It lasted from the 15th century to the 19th century.

    • Plantations are large farms in the colonies that used the enforced labor to harvest “ cash crops “ such as cotton, rice, indigo, sugar, tobacco and other farm produce for trade and export

How to produce the "ideal slave”

  • Maintain strict discipline and unconditional submission.
  • Create a sense of personal inferiority, so that slaves "know their place."
  • Instill fear.
  • Teach servants to take interest in their master's enterprise.
  • Deprive access to education and recreation, to ensure that slaves remain uneducated, helpless, and dependent.

  • For Morocco , it was only in 1925 that a law explicitly prohibiting slavery
  • Mauritania is the world’s last country to abolish slavery , 2007

MODERN SLAVERY CONSEQUENCES

  • Child Sex Trafficking : Sex trafficking has devastating consequences for children, including long-lasting physical and psychological trauma, disease (including HIV/AIDS), drug addiction, unwanted pregnancy, malnutrition, social ostracism, and even death.

  • Slavery in companies : employees work in very bad conditions for long hours and with miserable salaries leading them to catch diseases easily, being on undernutrition all the time and once they can’t fulfill their duty correctly, the company gets rid of them

  • Slave trades : One of the consequences of slave trade is the massive gains of the traders who made fortunes and became extremely wealthy out of this slavery. One of the major slave trade that still exist is in India

  • In North Korea => 4,373% of the population
