Message: School food service professionals must follow complicated requirements for serving size, meal components, and nutrition requirements. But they are working! A 2021 study from Tufts University that followed over 20,000 kids for 10 years showed that food consumed at schools had the highest quality, followed by food from grocery stores, other sources, worksites, and restaurants (and these improvements were equitable across different populations). This was especially true after the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 Healthy, which the researchers found produced large, specific, and equitable impacts. Across population subgroups, the consistency of improvements for food from schools was striking. Most improvement occurred after 2010, mainly attributable to increased whole grains and fruits, as well as greens and beans and decreased sugar, sweetened beverages, refined grains, added sugar, and saturated fat. The timing and specific food changes coincide with passage of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which mandated new school and early childcare nutrition standards: more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; less refined grains, sodium, and certain fats (total fat, saturated fat, and trans fat); and no sugar sweetened beverages
