Why is Family Important?

SCRIPTURE

3 And behold, because of the thing which I have seen, I have reason to rejoice in the Lord because of Nephi and also of Sam; for I have reason to suppose that they, and also many of their seed, will be saved.

4 But behold, Laman and Lemuel, I fear exceedingly because of you; for behold, methought I saw in my dream, a dark and dreary wilderness.

- 1 Nephi 8:3-4

Why is Family Important?

John H. Groberg

Of the First Quorum of the Seventy

1976-2005

All of us, single or married, are eternally part of some family… and much of our joy in life comes as we correctly recognize and properly develop those family relationships. We come to this earth charged with a mission: to learn to love and serve one another. To best help us accomplish this, God has placed us in families, for he knows that is where we can best learn to overcome selfishness and pride and to sacrifice for others and to make happiness and helpfulness and humility and love the very essence of our character.

- Elder John H. Groberg, “The Power of Family Prayer,” General Conference, April 1982

Families Can Be Together Forever(Children’s Song Book #188)

MUSIC

1. I have a fam’ly here on earth.

They are so good to me.

I want to share my life with them through all eternity.

2. While I am in my early years,

I’ll prepare most carefully,

So I can marry in God’s temple for eternity.

Chorus:

Fam’lies can be together forever

Through Heav’nly Father’s plan.

I always want to be with my own family,

And the Lord has shown me how I can.

The Lord has shown me how I can.

The word of God leads me to the Savior and helps me feel His love

SCRIPTURE

8 And after I had traveled for the space of many hours in darkness, I began to pray unto the Lord that he would have mercy on me, according to the multitude of his tender mercies.

9 And it came to pass after I had prayed unto the Lord I beheld a large and spacious field.

10 And it came to pass that I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy.

The word of God leads me to the Savior and helps me feel His love

Boyd K. Packer

President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

You may think that Lehi’s dream or vision has no special meaning for you, but it does. You are in it; all of us are in it (see 1 Nephi 19:23). Lehi’s dream or vision of the iron rod has in it everything a … Latter-day Saint needs to understand the test of life…

If you hold to the rod, you can feel your way forward with the gift of the Holy Ghost, conferred upon you at the time you were confirmed a member of the Church. The Holy Ghost will comfort you. You will be able to feel the influence of the angels, as Nephi did, and feel your way through life.

The Iron Rod(Hymn Book #274)

MUSIC

1. To Nephi, seer of olden time,

A vision came from God,

Wherein the holy word sublime

Was shown an iron rod.

2. While on our journey here below,

Beneath temptation's pow'r,

Through mists of darkness we must go,

In peril ev'ry hour.

3. And when temptation's pow'r is nigh,

Our pathway clouded o'er,

Upon the rod we can rely,

And heaven's aid implore.

Words: Ralph Rodgers Jr., 1936–1996; K. Newell Dayley, b. 1939; and Laurie Huffman, b. 1948

Music: K. Newell Dayley, b. 1939

© 1978, 1979 by K. Newell Dayley.

4. And, hand o'er hand, the rod along,

Through each succeeding day,

With earnest prayer and hopeful song,

We'll still pursue our way.

5. Afar we see the golden rest

To which the rod will guide,

Where, with the angels bright and blest,

Forever we'll abide.

Chorus:

Hold to the rod, the iron rod;

'Tis strong, and bright, and true.

The iron rod is the word of God;

'Twill safely guide us through.

The Faithful Partake of the Fruit of the Tree

Principles of Peace: God’s Word

When we read about Christ and study His words, we find His example and teachings to follow. (2:02)

God will reveal truth to me if I diligently seek it

SCRIPTURE

19 For he that diligently seeketh shall find; and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in these times as in times of old, and as well in times of old as in times to come; wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

God will reveal truth to me if I diligently seek it

Rubén V. Alliaud

Quorum of the Seventy

My invitation this afternoon to each of us, regardless of how long we’ve been a member of the Church, is to allow the power of the truths of the Book of Mormon to find us and embrace us once again and day after day as we diligently seek for personal revelation. It will do so if we allow it.

I solemnly testify that the Book of Mormon contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ and that the Holy Ghost will confirm the truth of it time after time to anyone who, with a sincere heart, seeks knowledge unto the salvation of their soul.

- Elder Rubén V. Alliaud , “Found through the Power of the Book of Mormon” General Conference, October 2019

MUSIC

1. As I search the holy scriptures,

Loving Father of mankind,

May my heart be blessed with wisdom,

And may knowledge fill my mind.

2. As I search the holy scriptures,

Touch my spirit, Lord, I pray.

May life's myst'ries be unfolded

As I study day by day.

3. As I search the holy scriptures,

May thy mercy be revealed.

Soothe my troubled heart and spirit;

May my unseen wounds be healed.

4. As I search the holy scriptures,

Help me ponder and obey.

In thy word is life eternal;

May thy light show me the way.

When we experience God’s love, we desire to help others experience it

SCRIPTURE

10 And it came to pass that I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy.

11 And it came to pass that I did go forth and partake of the fruit thereof; and I beheld that it was most sweet, above all that I ever before tasted. Yea, and I beheld that the fruit thereof was white, to exceed all the whiteness that I had ever seen.

12 And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit.

When we experience God’s love, we desire to help others experience it

Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

If someone asks about your weekend, don’t hesitate to talk about what you experienced at church. Tell about the little children who stood in front of a congregation and sang with eagerness how they are trying to be like Jesus. Talk about the group of youth who spent time helping the elderly in rest homes to compile personal histories. Talk about the recent change in our Sunday meeting schedule and how it blesses your family. Or explain why we emphasize that this is the Church of Jesus Christ and that we are Latter-day Saints, just as the members of the ancient Church were also called Saints.

In whatever ways seem natural and normal to you, share with people why Jesus Christ and His Church are important to you. Invite them to “come and see.” Then encourage them to come and help. There are numerous opportunities for people to help in our Church.

Ancient prophets knew about Jesus Christ’s mission and testified of Him

Ancient prophets knew about Jesus Christ’s mission and testified of Him

SCRIPTURE

4 Yea, even six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem, a prophet would the Lord God raise up among the Jews—even a Messiah, or, in other words, a Savior of the world.

5 And he also spake concerning the prophets, how great a number had testified of these things, concerning this Messiah, of whom he had spoken, or this Redeemer of the world.

Ancient prophets knew about Jesus Christ’s mission and testified of Him

Spencer W. Kimball

President of the Church

We read of the unchangeable Lord in the holy scriptures. In the Bible, which we proclaim “to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly” [A of F 1:8], the Old Testament prophets from Adam to Malachi are testifying of the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father. Jesus Christ was the God of the Old Testament, and it was He who conversed with Abraham and Moses. It was He who inspired Isaiah and Jeremiah; it was He who foretold through those chosen men the happenings of the future, even to the latest day and hour.

Follow the Prophet(Children’s Song Book #110)

MUSIC

1. Adam was a prophet, first one that we know.

In a place called Eden, he helped things to grow.

Adam served the Lord by following his ways.

We are his descendants in the latter days.

2. Enoch was a prophet; he taught what was good.

People in his city did just what they should.

When they were so righteous that there was no sin,

Heav’nly Father took them up to live with him.

3. Noah was a prophet called to preach the word,

Tried to cry repentance, but nobody heard.

They were busy sinning—Noah preached in vain.

They wished they had listened when they saw the rain.

4. Abraham the prophet prayed to have a son,

So the Lord sent Isaac as the chosen one.

Isaac begat Jacob, known as Israel;

Jacob’s sons were twelve tribes, so the Bible tells.

5. Moses was a prophet sent to Israel.

He would lead them to the promised land to dwell.

They were slow to follow, or so it appears.

They were in the wilderness for forty years.

Words and music: Duane E. Hiatt, b. 1937. © 1989 IRI

6. Samuel was a prophet chosen as a boy.

Hannah promised God her son would serve with joy.

In the tabernacle, Samuel heard his name;

He was called by God and answered, “Here I am!”

7. Jonah was a prophet, tried to run away,

But he later learned to listen and obey.

When we really try, the Lord won’t let us fail:

That’s what Jonah learned deep down inside the whale.

8. Daniel was a prophet. He refused to sin;

So the king threw Daniel in the lion’s den.

Angels calmed the lions, and the king soon saw

Daniel’s pow’r was great, for he obeyed God’s law.

9. Now we have a world where people are confused.

If you don’t believe it, go and watch the news.

We can get direction all along our way,

If we heed the prophets—follow what they say.

Chorus:

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,

Follow the prophet; don’t go astray.

Follow the prophet, follow the prophet,

Follow the prophet; he knows the way.

The scriptures are of great worth

Prophets Testify Of Christ

“All Prophets Testify Of Christ" Prophets such as Isaiah, Job, Nephi and all who have witnessed of the savior and have seen his face testify of our Redeemer... The Redeemer of Mankind. (3:05)

Why Do We Have Prophets?

God used prophets in the biblical times to relay His message and teach His children. Today, that same God is still calling prophets. (1:37)

Samuel and the Star

Samuel, amid opposition and great personal danger, stood upon a city wall and proclaimed within five years the Savior would be born. (3:04)

God will reveal truth to me by the power of the Holy Ghost

SCRIPTURE

17 And it came to pass after I, Nephi, having heard all the words of my father, concerning the things which he saw in a vision, and also the things which he spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, which power he received by faith on the Son of God—and the Son of God was the Messiah who should come—I, Nephi, was desirous also that I might see, and hear, and know of these things, by the power of the Holy Ghost, which is the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him, as well in times of old as in the time that he should manifest himself unto the children of men.

- 1 Nephi 10:17

God will reveal truth to me by the power of the Holy Ghost

Mathias Held

Of the Seventy

[W]e have been given two sources of information, through our physical and spiritual capacities. Our mind produces one perception through our physical senses and through our reasoning. But through the gift of the Holy Ghost, the Father has also provided us with a second perspective, which is really the most important and true one because it comes directly from Him. But since the whisperings of the Spirit are often so subtle, many people are not consciously aware of that additional source.

When these two perspectives are then combined in our souls, one complete picture shows the reality of things as they truly are. In fact, through the additional perspective of the Holy Ghost, certain “realities,” as pictured exclusively through our mental understanding, can be exposed as deceiving or plainly wrong. Remember the words of Moroni: “By the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”

The Holy Ghost(Children’s Song Book #105)

MUSIC

1. When Christ was on the earth,

He promised he would send

The Holy Ghost to comfort us,

Our true, eternal friend.

The Holy Spirit whispers

With a still small voice.

He testifies of God and Christ

And makes our hearts rejoice.

.

2. And when we are confirmed

By sacred priesthood pow’r,

The Holy Ghost is giv’n to us

To guide us ev’ry hour.

Oh, may I always listen

To that still small voice.

And with his light I’ll do what’s right

Each time I make a choice.
