What is racial justice?

Racial justice is when people of all races and or ethnicities are treated equally.

Preventing examples of racial discrimination; fighting against racial oppression and working towards systemic change is a way to fight against injustice/inequity.

Internalized vs interpersonal racism

  • Internalized racism is when a person accepts mean words and stereotypes about their, or someone else’s culture, race, and beliefs.

  • Interpersonal racism is when a person's awareness of racial bias influences the way they see or hear someone else based off their race. This bias is often formed by stereotypes, and misinformation.

INTERNALIZED RACISM EXAMPLES

-Viewing white as “The norm” or “Ideal” .

-Valuing white or light skin over dark skin and trying to lighten skin color harmful skin products, surgery, or consuming anything.

-Increased levels of self-hatred, shame, and rejection of one’s own identity and/or culture.

-Trying to get rid of “Ethnic” features that don't fit the Eurocentric beauty standard.

INTERPERSONAL RACISM EXAMPLES

-Attacks against asian americans, in response to COVID-19 being called the, ‘Asian Virus’

-Complimenting BIPOC individuals on their English with the assumption that they wouldn’t well because of their race.

-Claims that immigrant workers steal American jobs.

-Shopkeepers/security following a BIPOC individual assuming they’re a shoplifter.

Prejudice vs racism

Prejudice

-An opinion that is not based on a reason or an actual experience.

An example, if you hold an opinion that woman do not like to travel in their jobs and, for this reason, you did not select a women for a job requiring travel.

Racism

-Discrimination against someone based on their race or ethnicity.
