Independence for young adults is about trying new things, taking on more responsibility, making decisions by themselves, and working out who they are and what they want to be. Achieving independence is an important part of the journey to adulthood. Responsibility and independence are two related qualities that help us succeed in adult life. Responsibility can be defined as the ability to control and manage one’s own life.
The reality is, a person with a disability often requires supports and can not afford to live independently on the funding they receive each month.
Worldwide, disability systems have continued to move away from congregated living towards individualized models of housing. Individualized housing aims to provide choice regarding living arrangements and the option to live in houses in community.
