THE GOSPEL-FORMED CHURCH
Big Idea:
The gospel is a wonderful reminder that the unity of the church is worth fighting for
Our Plan:Titus 3:9-15
1) Avoid (vs. 9)
“9 Avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.”
1) Avoid (vs. 9)
“Controversies appeal to our sense of self-importance. They can make us feel important in the grand scheme of things. We find significance in being foot soldiers (or usually, let’s admit, we see ourselves as generals). Controversy plays to our vanity. We have a love-hate relationship with feeling embattled.
It’s not that controversies are never necessary. Many times, they are. But too often, the indignation we see is less the result of spiritual seriousness and more the result of egotistical enthusiasm.” ~Trevin Wax
2) Confront (vs. 10-11)
“10 As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him,
11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”
2) Confront (vs. 10-11)
“I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way, that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them!” ~ Romans 16:17
“…as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” ~ Romans 12:18
3) Return (vs. 12-15)
“14 Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.”
3) Return (vs. 12-15)
“43 But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” ~Mark 10:43-45
