Daily routines….

  • Why a routine? Think of them as a “warm up” before a run or workout.
  • This valuable classroom routine creates a discourse based mathematical community, allows students to solve problems in multiple ways, establish flexibility and accuracy with numbers, and it supports the Mathematical Practices.
  • How do I get started? Establish the expectations, create the climate, and jump in!

How can I encourage more Discourse in the classroom? Questions and talk stems!

    • Does anyone have the same answer but a different way to explain it?
    • Does that make sense?
    • Can you design a model to show that?
    • Is that true for all cases?
    • Can you think of a counterexample?
    • Do you see a pattern?
    • Have we ever solved a problem like this before?

Mindset

Monday

Mindset Monday- Monday is a grab bag!

  • Mondays are rough in my 5th grade class. I strategically use my number routine to “clear the cobwebs” and put us all in the positive mindset for success!
  • Estimation exploration
  • Diagram Match
  • Wild Number

Mindset Monday- diagram match

  • Choose a set of cards from the bags marked “Match”
  • Work with your partner to match the diagrams to expressions and even word problems!

MindSet Monday- Wild Number

  • Wild Number can be done in different ways. I give students a “focus” number.
  • They are then tasked with showing how to represent that number.
  • Challenge students with creating the number as many ways as they can.

True or False

Tuesday

True or False Tuesday

  • True or False Tuesday allows students to understand that mistakes are valuable and everyone makes them.
  • This also gives students an opportunity to critique the reasoning of others and construct viable arguments in a safe space.
  • True or False can be used with a number of problems: fractions/decimals, multiplication/division, word problems, geometry, volume- pretty much anything you are working on.
  • Let’s give it a go!

True or False?

(Ask students to show how they know- prove it whether they agree or not)

Which One Doesn’t Belong Wednesday

  • WODB develops critical thinking and communication skills as students must construct a viable argument to justify their choice.
  • Aligns with mathematical practices like making sense of problems, constructing arguments, critiquing reasoning, and looking for and using structure.
  • Low floor, high ceiling tasks where everyone can have an answer!

Thoughtful Thursday- pattern Recognition

  • Helps with the composition and decomposition of numbers.
  • Builds fluency
  • Reinforces linear visualization, along with sequencing.
  • Develops understanding of structure and how to model with mathematics.

Thoughtful Thursday- Number Heist

3.971= (3x1)+(9x.1)+(7x.01)+(1x.001)

This activity can be played in many different ways, depending on your grade level and abilities.

Fluency FUn Friday!

Fluency Fun Friday!

  • My class came in with a distaste for typical fluency (timed tests), so I flipped fluency on it’s head with math games and open ended tasks that promote fluency with fun!
  • YouCubed.org, OpenUp Resources, nRich Maths, and 3 Act Math are al1 great resources (Links are included in the resource page)
  • Don’t forget to PLAY!!

26 of 29

Fluency Fun Friday

  • Get one of the bags marked “Games” with your partner
  • Decide which color game you want to play.
  • Split the cards into two even piles.
  • Flip them over at the same time
  • The partner with the greater amount wins both cards.
  • The player with the most cards at the end- wins!

Fluency Fun Friday

  • Choose a game with your partner (some games have a different game on each side)
  • Get your materials
  • Directions are at the top
  • Have fun!
