Kalpana Chawla was an Indian-American astronaut and the first woman of Indian origin in space. Born in Karnal, India, she earned a degree in aeronautical engineering before immigrating to the United States. In 1997, she made history as part of the Space Shuttle Columbia mission, becoming the first woman of Indian origin in space. Tragically, the mission ended in disaster, with the Columbia disintegrating upon re-entry in 2003. Kalpana Chawla's contributions to space exploration and her inspirational journey continue to be remembered.
SHANKUNTALA DEVI
Shakuntala Devi, often referred to as the "Human Computer," was an Indian mathematician known for her exceptional ability to solve complex mathematical problems without any mechanical aid. Born in Bangalore, India, in 1929, she demonstrated her prodigious mathematical skills from a young age. Devi's remarkable mental calculations earned her a place in the 1982 edition of The Guinness Book of World Records. Her legacy lives on as an inspiring figure who showcased the beauty and versatility of the human mind in the realm of mathematics.
M S SUBBU LAKSHMI
M.S. Subbulakshmi, often hailed as the "Queen of Carnatic Music," was a legendary Indian classical vocalist. Born in 1916 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, she displayed a prodigious talent for music from a young age. Subbulakshmi's contribution to classical music, particularly in the Carnatic tradition, is considered unparalleled. M.S. Subbulakshmi was the first Indian musician to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1998. Apart from her classical prowess, she also lent her voice to devotional songs, including the timeless "Bhaja Govindam."
YAMINI KRISHNA MURTHY
Yamini Krishnamurthy is a renowned Indian classical dancer, celebrated for her exceptional contributions to the field of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Born in 1940 in Madanapalle, Andhra Pradesh. Yamini Krishnamurthy's graceful movements, expressiveness, and dedication to preserving the authenticity of classical dance earned her widespread acclaim. Krishnamurthy has been honored with several awards, including the Padma Bhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, recognizing her significant role in promoting and preserving Indian classical dance traditions.
SAROJINI NAIDU
Sarojini Naidu, known as the "Nightingale of India," was a prominent Indian political leader, poet, and activist. Born in 1879, she played a crucial role in the Indian independence movement and was the first Indian woman to be the President of the Indian National Congress. Her poetry often reflected the social and political concerns of her time. Naidu's notable works include "The Golden Threshold" and "The Broken Wing."Sarojini Naidu's multifaceted contributions to Indian society, both as a political leader and a literary figure, have left an enduring legacy.
RANI LAKSHMI BAI
Rani Lakshmi Bai, also known as the Rani of Jhansi, was a prominent figure in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against British rule. Born in 1828 in Varanasi, she was named Manikarnika and later married the Maharaja of Jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao. Rani Lakshmi Bai actively resisted the British East India Company's annexation of Jhansi. Despite her valiant efforts, Rani Lakshmi Bai died in battle in 1858. Her legacy lives on as a symbol of courage and patriotism, and she is remembered as one of the key figures in India's fight for independence.
MARRY KOM
Mary Kom, whose full name is Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, is an Indian Olympic boxer and a prominent figure in the world of women's boxing. Born in Manipur, India, in 1982, Mary Kom has achieved remarkable success and has been a trailblazer for women in sports. Mary Kom is a six-time world champion and an Olympic bronze medalist. She has been a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes, breaking barriers and stereotypes in a traditionally male-dominated sport. In addition to her achievements in the ring, Mary Kom has been honored with numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan.
