  • You will be visiting three stations to gather evidence

    • Reading and annotating an article

    • Examining maps from an atlas and answering questions

    • Examining artifacts from an ancient Indian settlement

  • Follow the direction sheets at each station

  • You may visit the stations in any order

Read & annotate the article�Indic Civilization: The Lost Civilization of Mohenjo-Daro

  • Use the space in the margins to code the article, using the symbols on the key to…
    • recall background knowledge of what we have learned about civilizations
    • determine important information
    • ask questions about things in the text you don't understand
    • monitor for the meaning of unfamiliar words
    • infer connections about what you have read to what we have studied about GRAPES
  • You should also write down thoughts that go with these symbols
  • When you finish, glue the article into your notebook on p. 85
  • Add at least one new piece of information to the annotation chart at the station and write your initials next to it.

Open to pages 86 & 87 and title them “Mohenjo-Daro Artifacts”

  • Draw a line across the middle of both pages.
  • We will use these pages to collect evidence as you examine 4 artifacts and ruins from the site of the ancient city of Mohenjo-daro.
  • For each artifact/ruin you examine, you will need to gather the following important information in your notebook:
    • description of the artifact/ruin
    • main idea from artifact/ruin reading
    • visualization of the artifact
    • aspect(s) of GRAPES the artifact connects to
    • what we can infer about early Indian civilization from the artifact/ruin
  • There are 5 artifacts total—choose 4 to complete

Artifact Example: Weights & Scales

  • Description: weights & scale made of stone - found along with bit of barley and wheat
  • Main Idea: Archaeologists believe grain may have been used as money and the scales and weights were used to measure grain.
  • GRAPES Connection: Economy (money & food supply)
  • Inference: We can infer that Ancient Indian civilization in Mohenjo-daro had a stable food supply and may have used grain as currency (money), suggesting they also had a developed economy.

Now that you have gathered evidence about civilization in ancient India, use it to answer the following two questions:

  • How did the cities of ancient India meet the needs of the people that lived there?
  • Based on your answer to the previous question, are the cities of ancient India more alike or different from modern cities today?

Remember to use appropriate structure and grammar in your responses. Pre-write to organize your ideas, explain your ideas completely, and use evidence from your stations to support them.

Mohenjo-daro Extension Activity: Museum Exhibit

  • Go to http://www.mohenjodaro.net/.
  • Spend some time reviewing and taking some notes on at least 6 different artifacts/ruins as well as the captions on the site.
  • After completing your research, your task is to plan a museum exhibit showing how Mohenjo-daro shows evidence of GRAPES.
  • Your exhibit should include:
    • Summary of Mohenjo-daro as part of the development of Ancient Indian civilization
    • At least 6 artifacts
    • For each artifact -
      • Sketch the artifact
      • Write a 1-2 sentence description of what it is, how it connects to GRAPES, and why you've included it in the exhibit
